正文
I admit that honesty is a virtue and very important to everyone, not only for common people, but also for an effective political leader. I also agree with the speaker that it is impossible and not necessary to be completely honest all the time.
Admittedly, honesty is the basic character to be an effective political leader. For common people, honesty is the precondition for their communication and making friends. For a politician, it is one of the most important characters to gain the trust of the public. Without people's trust, he will lose people's support and finally lose the power, which will even result in a political crisis. For example, in 1999, when SARS was first widespread in China, China government did not tell the true situation to the public, which made the disease spread more quickly and many people even lost their lives. From this example, we can see how important for a politician to tell the truth, especially in such circumstances.
However, to tell the truth always is too hard to do for an effective political leader. As is known to everyone, to be common people, complete honesty is almost impossible and we often need to tell some well-meaning lies. For example, we often have to disguise the real state of an illness to our relatives in order to alleviate their pain. Politicians are also common people, so it is too strict to require them to tell the truth always. In addition, for a person to run for a political position, during the process of election, it is often needed for him to not to be honest. For example, in order to win the election, he has to disguise his shortcomings and ambitions, and make some promises to the public, such as improving their living conditions or decreasing the taxes in order to win the supports of public. In fact, when he gets the position, he often forgets unconsciously or purposely some of his promises.
In addition, sometimes it is even necessary or a responsibility for an effective political leader not to tell the truth. Every government have some commercial or martial secrets that must be kept well, otherwise, it will bring serious disasters to the countries. Thus, for an effective political, he should not tell the truth under any conditions, even at the cost of his life. Such lie will not be blamed by people and the politician will even be regarded as a hero of the country because what he do is to protect the profits of the public.
To sum up, complete honesty is not a useful and required virtue for a politician. To be an effective political leader, he has to judge when to tell the truth and when to disguise the truth under the guide of protecting the profits of the whole country and the common public. |
