TOPIC:ISSUE 50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."

According to the title of assertion, all faculties ought to be demanded to work outside the academic world in professions relating with their teaching courses, for the purpose of enhancing the quality of instruction. I fundamentally agree with the contention of the speaker. On balance, however, we should cautiously utilize the recommendation of the speaker and do not take it far, because the speaker overemphasize all the faculties working outside.

To begin with, the threshold reason why I tend to favor the statement of the speaker is that with the technology and economy keeping rapidly developing with out cessation, students, parents, and the whole society need the college and university improve the quality of instruction to keep abreast with the development of society. In recent decades, more and more complaints and controversies are evoked by the discontent with the quality of instruction. People hold the viewpoint that traditional instructions always lag behind advanced technologies and varying society, and thus reforms and changes inevitably expect to apply to our educations systems. Consider, for example, the textbook of digital communication. When we open some of the traditional and classical books, we will find some of the theory and technologies were flourished 5, even 10 years ago. It is certain that digital technology develops and advances quickly so that almost every day there is new theories and papers in that field. Yet, our textbooks more or less are out of date and can not catch the latest development and changes in academic world. In this case, how can we imagine that our education can provide good students to our society?

In addition, the second reason why I agree with the speaker's view is that requirement that all teachers in college should work in the realistic work, is a suitable and far-reaching method to improve the level of instruction quality. In my observance, there are three major advantages in advocated manner by the speaker. Firstly, teachers spend time in working relevant to the courses they teach, and then can effectively enhance them understand theory and find relevant applications in their major, which, in turn, will aid them improving the quality of instruction at the university. Secondly, faculty can recognize the requirement of corporations, profession, and society leading to well devising the courses to help students to make preparation for their work in the future. Thirdly, teachers will ferret out cutting-edge and controversial issues, and thus they can find the appropriate aim to research and publish papers.

Admittedly, if we only draw attention to the virtues of the speaker's outlook, we might go extremely to call for that the entire faculty must go outside the academic world in order to raise the educational quality. For one thing, in actual fact, some course faculty can not find the suitable position to work outside, such as literature, philosophy, unclear physics, and the forth. For another, if many teachers have relevant tasks or projects at the university, it is impossible that the university require those teachers go out work and give up their processing projects. Thus, when the appropriate way exerts to the improper situations, the result is naturally not good and sound.

To sum up, due to analysis and reasons mentioned above, we may safely draw a conclusion that due to the requirement of whole society, the college and university should demand their faculty improving their instruction quality. Meanwhile, working outside the academic world is a proper mode to achieve that object. Of course, to some special majors, we can not compulsorily enact the same requirement to them.
