The speaker asserts that every individual in a society has a responsibility to obey just laws and disobey unjust laws. While I contend that it is hard to tell between just and unjust laws, I agree with the speaker otherwise. In actual fact, I would go further by contending that obeying laws makes society in line, that resisting unjust laws could develop a society, and that citizens and officials ought to exert their utmost to perfect laws and the process of lawmaking.
As what comes first, when talking about just and unjust laws, people would find it difficult to tell how to define, exactly, the just laws and unjust laws. The reasons for the phenomenon above include that laws’ justness or unjustness would change as the time and places are changed, and that people’s thinking about morality and justness might be changing through times. For instances, it is illegal to disobey rules made by government or attack officials in governments. But in some revolution, people have to fight against the existing government and build up a new government or find a new political leader. Most revolutions in history were considered illegal and disobeying just laws when they just began, and then it turned to be right with new laws which are considered just built up. Besides, there are a myriad of puzzling items of laws which are debated that weather they are just or unjust, like the marriage of homosexual, abortion, and clone. Those things could cause problems in society to some extent, but weather they are rights people deserve is still a question remaining for research.
Nevertheless, most people would not deny that to obey existing laws makes social harmony, and that to resist existing laws leads to confusion in society. A society is constituted by groups of people with different interests and ideas, and it could not have a harmony if people in the society do not have a law to obey. It is surely that people in society would have some disagreement and fighting, and obeying laws make troubles solved in a peaceful way. However, there are some unjust laws existing, which hurt some groups of people if those unjust laws could not be resisted. Resisting laws make developments of a society and people’s thoughts. For example, the abolishment of using slaves in America liberated floods of black people, and that was a progress in freedom in the United States. Therefore, both obeying and disobeying laws would have their effects on a society, and the effects depend on the situation.
To better develop our society, people need exert their utmost to perfect laws and the process of lawmaking. There is no perfect society, because there would always be some social problems waiting for people to solve. But people could exert to make laws as perfect as possible to protect human being’s, or even animals, pants’ rights. Thus there would be a better world, in which everything is protected by laws and people could claims for their rights through process of law resisting and lawmaking.
In sum, I agree that to simply judge a law just or unjust is not proper or logical. Understandably, people with different interests would have different attitude toward the same law. Nonetheless, people long for perfect world with just laws. If what have been discussed above are considered thoroughly, it is safe to come to the conclusion that every individual has a responsibility to obey just laws and, more importantly, to disobey and resist unjust laws. |
