In the modern world, television as a household appliance is so common and familiar to people all over the world. Take the powerful function and the significance in people’ daily life into account, the issuer claimed that people can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books. However, I hold the opposite opinions that though people could attain much knowledge by watching TV, they cannot learn as much as they can by reading books.

As a threshold matter, it is undeniable that to learn by watching TV has lots of advantages in education. By watching TV, people are exposed to the vivid and instructive pictures accompanied with sweet sound explaining particularly, which is helpful for understanding. The famous academic program Discovery, for instance, is the typical TV program that elaborates the special and magic worlds that hardly reached to the audiences, such as the out space, the kingdom of insects, the submarine realm and so on. From the TV show, the process of a virus colonies our body and makes us suffering, the mechanism of a aircraft, the history of an aged dynasty are arranged and provide more understandable and impressive instructions than books do. Compared with the expressive teaching via TV, books tend to be bland and tiresome.

However, while the goodness of TV is listed above, the weakness of education by watchingTV should not be ignored, either. For one thing, when watching TV, a TV machine, electricity and TV wave signal is indispensable. Considering the volume and weight of TV set and supply of the electricity and wave signal, to use a TV is under such limitation of time and place, which is not so convenient as books are . For another thing, the program show on TV is not entirely depended on the will and fancy of individuals. Thus selection of the content of program is confined, or even all the choices are not so appealing. As a summary, the deficient of education by watching TV is not convenient as books.

Further more, as the main media to record, conserve and convey knowledge, books are of such superiors than TV that they are convenient to product, carry and preserve, contains large amount of information, and of varied kinds of publications. It is undoubted that the sorts of books far exceed that of TV programs. As a result, people can bring books along with them and read whenever and wherever they want, and choose the one they prefer. Besides, as the prime media to restore information, books provide people with nearly all they demand. In addition, book publication are carefully censored than TV programs, and provides the more precise information, especially the date of science and result of survey.

In a word, according to what had been recounted above, a conclusion could be draw safely that books offer the more accurate and updated information in larger amount than TV, while TV offer more vivid and understandable knowledge, bothof them have the their own superiority to meet different needs in acquiring of knowledge, thus in order to obtain entire and impressive knowledge, people should complement one with another when studying.
