TOPIC: ISSUE49 - "Imaginative works such as novels, plays, films, fairy tales, and legends present a more accurate and meaningful picture of human experience than do factual accounts. Because the creators of fiction shape and focus reality rather than report on it literally, their creations have a more lasting significance."

Do imaginary works have more lasting significance than factual accounts, since they are present a more accurate and meaningful picture of human experience, as the speaker asserts? In my point of view, some of the imaginary woks purely derive from imagination and some of them are based on our daily experiences. And both imaginary works and factual accounts are indispensable part of literature.
Some of the imaginary works such as fair tales and legends, are primarily derived from people's imagination. For instance, in ancient China, people created the stories saying the thunders and rains are controlled by the deities who lived in the heaven. The Japanese used to tell that the earthquakes were due to the movement of a giant turtle which carried the land. And the ancient Greek Legends tells stories about all the deities who governed the whole world. All these imaginary stories were created to satisfy people's curiosity about natural phenomena, and release their fears toward nature and life. They are important because they represent the culture and mores of their contemporary times.
And some of the novels, plays and films are present us with the condensed lives which are derived out of our daily life experiences, giving us insight into humanity and nature. We are inspired by the courage to challenge the fierce force of nature which described in The Old Man and The Sea wrote by Hemingway; moved by the eternal love showed in Shakespeare's Romio and Juliet; encouraged by the independence of Jane Eyre. These works are based on the human experiences, but they surpassed them by concentrating dramatic plots on a few main characters, which make the stories more engaging , memorable and didactic.
However, the factual accounts are with equal importance in literature, as a different genre. The factual accounts may not apply as much rhetoric methods as imaginary works do, but they give us an accurate record about what happened in the past or on the person. That is to say, those works are free from the authors' own opinions, leaving the judgment to readers. If someone wants to know what has actually happened and what has not, he/she should better resort to factual accounts rather than imaginary works. Consequently, the factual records are vital to the study of history, because it is one of the most reliable ways to get to historical truth. In this sense, factual records and documents are with lasting values.
Moreover, imagination and factual accounts can cooperate perfectly to create more attractive and meaningful works. For example, the film Schindler's List is based on a true story of a merchant who saved lives of many Jews during The World War Two, which makes it more powerful than those films which are purely imaginary. The Twin's novels are all cast on the backdrop of the early 1900s, showing us what the lives were like back to that time, which combined with the brave characters.
In sum, no matter the imaginary works or the factual accounts are of lasting significance, since both of them give us insight into human nature, our society and the beauty of nature. |
