TOPIC: ARGUMENT240 - The following appeared in a memo written by a dean at Buckingham College.

"To serve the housing needs of our students, Buckingham College should build a new dormitory. Buckingham's enrollment is growing and, based on current trends, should double over the next fifty years, thus making existing dormitories inadequate. Moreover, the average rent for an apartment in our town has increased in recent years. Consequently, students will find it increasingly difficult to afford off-campus housing. Finally, an attractive new dormitory would make prospective students more likely to enroll at Buckingham."

There is no precise evidence that Buckingham College should build a new dormitory. So I am not agreeing with the conclusion that Buckingham should build a new dormitory.

In the first place, the arguer recommends that B's enrollment is growing and the number fifty years later may double compare with the recent number. But without precise statistics, the arguer obtains the evidence with unwarranted assumption. Maybe the number in this University just 10 students and the double number just 20 students. Without consider the situation of dormitory of new, there are enough empty dormitory for the increased enrollment students. Current tendency may basis on an occasional reason such as the reputation of the school or the fashion academic in this university, may not contribute to enlarge the scale of university. So there is may no increased requirement for construction of new dormitory. What's more, the enrollment number of student may not the really actual student number; many students may not accomplish their studying in this University.

In the second place, there are other choices for student to choose instead living in campus. Such as day students who study in university and return home at night, there is no need for such student living in university. However, the statistics did not contain the information about these students. These students also can choose other accommodation style such as rent house near the university or change the arrangement of dormitory that can service more student than before. There is already such fact that more students choose rent for an apartment in our town, but without analysis the reason and the actual situation we can hardly draw the conclusion that the student find difficult to afford off-campus housing. They can share the bill, which may cheaper than expense living in campus.

What's more, there are several other factors more influence the students number. The reputation of the university, the quality and quantity of education resource that is more important than the dormitory environment. So we can not justify the conclusion that the attractive dormitory would make prospective students more likely to enroll at Buckingham.

We need the precise information about the dormitory situation, whether it can meet the requirement of students. Without consider other factor influence on the construction of dormitory and other factors contribute to prospective on students, the conclusion can not made me convincing.

There is no precise evidence that Buckingham College should build a new dormitory. So I do not agree with the conclusion that Buckingham should build a new dormitory.

In the first place, thearguer recommends that B's enrollment is growing and the number fiftyyears later may double compare with the recent number. But withoutprecise statistics, the arguer obtains the evidence with unwarranted assumption. Maybe the number in this Universityjust 10 students and the double number just 20 students.(有点偏激哦) Withoutconsidering the situation of dormitory of new, there are enough emptydormitory(dormitories) for the increased enrollment students. Current tendency maybasis(base) on an occasional reason such as the reputation of the school orthe fashion academic in this university, may not contribute to enlargethe scale of university. So there is may no increased requirement forconstruction of new dormitory. What's more, the enrollment number ofstudent may not the really actual student number; many students may notaccomplish their studying in this University(留级么??).

In the secondplace, there are other choices for student to choose instead living incampus. Such as day students who study in university and returnhome at night, there is no need for such student living in university. However, the statistics did not contain the information about thesestudents. They can share the bill, which may cheaper than expense living in campus.

What's more(口语化,不过据说ETS是不关注口语和书面语的区别的), there areseveral other factors more influence the students number. Thereputation of the university, the quality and quantity of education resourcethat is more important than the dormitory environment. So we can notjustify the conclusion that the attractive dormitory would makeprospective students more likely to enroll at Buckingham.
