ISSUE147 - "Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."
Modernization, an appealing word in today's rapid developing world, refers to the action of making something become modern, as in taste, style, or usage. It seems that the purpose of modernization is always to eliminate tradition and replace them with some modern things. Therefore, in someone's opinion, tradition and modernization are mutually exclusive, one have to make a choice between them. However, as far as I am concerned, tradition and modernization are actually inseparable they could coexist perfectly and complement one another.
Admittedly, modernized means changing inferior things into superior ones, and recasting our lives with a more advanced and wonderful shape, which seems quite different from tradition. Indeed, the development of modern civilization of human beings bring a ever-increasing amount of knowledge and therefore the application of knowledge could offer numerous more scientific and technological methods to improve the living condition and work efficiency of mankind, comparing to traditional way. Consequently, some inconvenient and time-consuming traditional technologies or even living habit, are inevitably to be replace by modernization. In China, ancient people ever wrote by carving characters in pieces of bamboo with a special knife, whereas, modern Chinese, using modernized tools, as pen, ball pen and the like, for writing, abandon this traditional method, and write on papers, which is more light to carry and easier to write on. This case illustrates the point that when modernized approaches are evidently better than that of tradition, they could replace tradition ones.
Nevertheless,we could never separate modernization from tradition. As a matter of fact, tradition is the origin and resource of modern things, and the course of modernization is nothing but add some modern element to tradition or improve what is traditional. In daily life, e-mail is just a modernized form of traditional letter, and e-book merely that of traditional book, even with modern media as carriers. In the circle of academic, any scholar who would like to modernized any discipline, should begin from learn the traditional theories, achievements, which always be viewed as classic and basic knowledge of that subject. Then he or she could know where to start and try to promote the evolvement of this areas to form a growing modernized one. When it comes to the realm of art, it is the some. In the viewpoint of an outsider, jazz and rock music might be rather distinguishing with classic music. However, many outstanding musician in modern rock and jazz have learned traditional music theories comprehensively and have developed a thorough understanding of classic music. The embracing of proper traditional rules makes the rhythm, melody and other music elements of their modern works present a sense of harmonious and aesthetic. All of these cases throw some light on the fact that tradition lay the fundament for modernization, refusing everything the tradition, all of the modernization could begin from nowhere.
Albeit in terms of technological problem, tradition have to give way to the somewhat overwhelming advantage of modernization, some timeless things such as art, virtue, culture, the wisdom of life and other treasures handed down generation after generation traditionally should not be discarded for the sake of modernization. Actually, in modern society these valuable heritages are being maintained and preserved with all kinds of advanced modern technologies. A children in television era could known something about the tradition of painting by watching a television program which show a collection of traditional masterpieces and tell them how to appreciate this great arts. Archeologists and historians of this time employ scientific methods to unearth historical sites, which always contain priceless antiques and records for the research of tradition, and prevent them from decaying. In this sense, modernization is working to discover, spread and protect valuable things of tradition instead of destroying them.
In conclusion, tradition and modernization are not incompatible as the title statement asserts, they could harmoniously get alone with each other and complement mutually. There is no need for us to choose between them, for the reason that they are inseparable. And the prosperity of human civilization calls for an excellent combination of tradition and modernization.
