TOPIC: ISSUE185 - "Scandals-whether in politics, academia, or other areas-can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."
There is no doubt that behind the brilliant appearance of those politicians , scientists and other famous people, there are many scandals which have been concealed by them to maintain their position. Although all the scandals have a hateful surface, we can learn much from those dirty things. The scandals can reveal weakpoints behind the systems of our nation's politics, academia or other areas.
The most serious scandals exposed by media are those that are from our political leaders or people who work in our government. Sometimes, these scandals can demolish the prospect of a person who is involved in it. Among these political scandals, the most prevalent ones are corruption, especially in developing countries. The governors receive briberies and promote the position of those people who offer these money to them. This kind of corruption can cause some very severe effects to a country. But if these scandals of corruption can be exposed by media, government can take action to punish those corrupt officials. Through these scandals, the unreasonable system of law or the political form of the nation can be picked up. Then the government can revise the country's legislation and make it more preventive from corruption. Even more, the reformers can take action to overturn some parts of the system of law and legislate a better one. We can see that through these scandals, a mature system of law of a country can be made gradually. And we can say that these scandals help our government to make our nation better.
Some academic scandals can often be found in the academic area of a country. This time, the scandals are often found in developed countries. In those high technology countries, the competition in academic areas is more vehement. Some times, a professor wants to make some fake data in an expriment to support his hypothesis or copy a paper to promote his influence in the academic areas. With the exposition of more and more academic scandals, the nation and those responsible institutions have to take actions to clarify the environment of their academic fields. And then they can get a more fair and clean atmosphere for their scientific research.
The most severe scandals are often caused by competition. As long as our humankind has a little bit of evil will, the scandals can not be annihilated forever. We can see that many great reforms are triggered by those scandals. Given the discussion above, the statemtent tells us a truth.
