When it comes to art, people usually think of painting, sculpture, drawing, music and so on. We realize that the art productions bring us entertainment. It is true, but is not enough. What is the real value of an art? The most important function of arts, to my understanding, is that revealing the hidden history of a society.
Artists create art works to illustrate their private emotions; these emotions are mostly established by the social environment and neighbors' attitude toward them, which deeply unfold the economic situation, social culture or human nature of that time. Thus, drawings, paintings, films, potteries and photographs are all byproducts of a society. By researching these art productions, people can thoroughly understand the beneficial and detrimental aspects of a society. The Modern Times of Chaplin, for example, intensively exposes the negative influence of a mechanized society, which turned workers into human puppets. The Renaissance painting of a Madonna And Child and other opuses at that time, reflects a medieval social phenomenon: artists and art only serve the dominate hierarchy such as religion, king and aristocrat. These discoveries, are crucial for us in finding the right way searching for the better future and self-liberate of human beings.
Visual and chromatic art works are discussed above; subsequently we turn our focus to literature, dancing and music. These incorporeal art forms do not simply reveal a society, but, more importantly, they promote the development of the society. The spirits, how to be a good man or how to strive for a better life, passed on from generation to generation in these opuses. And the precious treasures inherited from the artists encourage people to perfect their own life. Then, they changed the society and history. Jane Eyre, for instance, describes a story about a revolution of women's love. As a result, quite a few women liberated themselves to find their true loves. Shakespeare's Macbeth, teaches us the inordinate ambition is pernicious. Then people learned to devise a scientific plan to ensure their goal more approachable. Beethoven's symphony illustrates the real connotation of Endurance to the listeners, and they became more patient. These changes, promote the development of the society and history.
Unfortunately, not all art works contributed to the progress of human being. We must distinguish between the negative but revolutionary opuses and scurrilous, harmful products. The potboilers may be results of twisted emotions of some artists, and more probably, they are generated from the oppression of dominance hierarchy. Dominators realized art would be a best approach to disseminate their volitions and transfigure the detrimental side of the society. They hire some artists, and urge them to create art products. Consider the German in World War Two as a representative example, to spread the racial discrimination will of Hitler, German artists as well as the artists living in the lost territories, are forced to create art works eulogizing Germanic peoples and disparaging the Jewish. These products distorted the real situation and misled people. Those, of cause, are obstacles hindering in the way to building a more democratic society.
As is mentioned above, the arts play an important role in social reform and revolution. The spirits and emotions illustrated, change our daily lives and our world views by degrees. The art works also tell us the truth, indicate what happened at that time, which, help us fill up the blank of history.
