Issue244 "Most societies do not take their greatest thinkers seriously, even when they claim to admire them."
Generally speaking, I approve of the assertion that all most the greatest thinkers have to face such a dilemma that most societies do not take them seriously even when they claim to admire them. Be a greatest thinker often means to be misunderstood, to be distorted, and even to be destroyed just because he transcends his times. From at least three aspects could we support and enrich the author’s issue. To start with, some societies are terrified by new and fashion ideas of philosophers and then become hostile to them. Because the greatest thinkers often cries for something just like freedom and justice in their theories, which always question the rulers and enlighten the people. Obviously, it is difficult for a society be tolerant to understand (comprehend, apprehend, apperceive) and accept a great thinker. To such a society, a real philosopher is really troublesome. As we know, the great thinker Socrates created the theories of virtue and justice which enlightens lots of young people and at the same time brought great pressure into the government of Greek to make some reforms. He tried for altering the minds of Ancient Greek, this made the rulers upset and irritated and subsequently sentenced to death. Thus tolerance is the first thing for a society to take its greatest thinkers seriously. Without it, a society couldn’t make good use of the greatest thoughts of the philosophers. In addition, some societies made false use of the greatest thinkers by claiming to admire them. For example, if a ruler except he has prestige to the masses who could like to sacrifice their wishes for him, even their lives, he would like them moralized by some certain theories. He knows clearly that the people admire the greatest thinkers seriously and only by the name of the philosophers could he practice his insidious ideas and selfish plans privately. By distorting the theories of such great thinkers or juggling the purpose of philosophers, the rulers could convince their people. Confucius is regarded as a greatest thinker in Ancient China. When we came into his times 2000 years ago, we could find there are replete with plenty of active and vivid expressions of ideas about the life and the world. But his theories were distorted badly and with dull and rigid dogmas of royalism by almost every dynasty. Every dynasty used him or his theories as their best model to moralize their people and strengthen his reign. But the reign under the distortion of greatest thinkers will make little progress of its culture and other at last. To be honest to the theories of the thinkers is essential to a society takes the thinkers seriously. Without the honesty to ideas of the greatest thinkers, a society is under the dangerous of self-deceiving. Finally, throughout human history, many great thinkers were ignored or persecuted. In the field of natural sciences, some profound thinkers were out of step with their time and society. Such as Galileo who is the founder of the modern scientific method, sentenced to death ultimately. Bruno, who is a supporter of the heliocentric Copernican view of the solar system was tried the Inquisition for heresy and burned at the stake.
