Should governments spend more money in sponsoring arts than athletics?

Both art and athletics serve an important function in satisfy human’s needs, psychological and physical respectively. And both of them are in need of government sponsorship. But when talking of fund, I’d agree to disburse more in art for the reasons of following.

The first reason lies in the fact that there are many ways for athletes to earn their own living. To understand this, you need to look no more than the basketball play ground. The surroundings are congested with advertisements, Canon, Kappa, American Airline, and etc. Of course club managers do not grant manufacturers such rights for free. Actually, they gain considerable money from this side. Furthermore, players get free Adidas uniforms while club gaining sponsor fee from the factory; not to say the revenue from tickets. With this sum of money, the sport surely can be sustained, or even promoted. From the government side, what they need to do is merely the cultivation of public attention to athletics and awareness to health, thence all sports can preserve themselves.

Art, especially fine art, on the other side, can hardly survive in nowadays fast-developing society, and therefore require of government fund. Some may argue that artists can make a living by selling their works, however, the incidence is these creatures can seldom deserve a price that equals to its value unless the artist gained recognition and fame. History have exhibited us plentiful of inspired artists who end up with miserable death which wells up our wondering that what if Van Gogh had been endowed with some government allowance?

Moreover, many artists turn out to be commercialized. In other words, their creatures, instead of being innovative and inspiring, are more prone to cater public satisfaction. Many of them confessed they give up their aspiration because they have to live. The reality is, if more and more artists tend to yield to survival necessities, there is a good chance that innovative art may disappear without trace. When it comes to the matter of existence of art, it seems that government funds cannot be less crucial.

Considering the finite government funds, it is more judicious to assign them to art rather than athletics because it matters to the preservation of our human mental gem.
