Can scandals whether in politics, academia, or other areas be useful as the author asserts? To some extent, they focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could. However, the author ignores the negative effect of scandals on the society.

In the realm of academia, the scandals like plagiarism as well as fabrication always draw populace’s concentration and are propitious to supervise the academia. Once a researcher is considered cheating in his research, he would suffer from rigorous penalty and the reputations disappear. At the same time, similar issues happening make people build up a comprehensive system to prevent scholars and students from scandals. For instance, there exists the anti-plagiarism technology, especially the anti-plagiarism software, which is recognizing and applying widely to examine whether the students’ papers crib. The anti-plagiarism software includes vast majority of the published papers, professors can compare students’ work with the known papers to see the similarity and identify whether the students independently finished the paper. The technology effectively prohibits the cheating behaviors and the form of it is due to the attention to the scandals in academia. In this sense, scandals in academia help people build up a purified and orderly academic field.

In the realm of politics, however, the scandals usually cause the distrust to the government and leave a negative effect on society. Consider the scandal about Clinton and Lewinsky. Not only people’s trust Clinton lost but also huge money which can be used in more meaningful fields like decline the unemployment had been wasted to investigate the cause and effect about the scandal. This famous political scandal which became the pall covering the whole society arose people’s distrust and outrage to the government
In the realm of business, scandals which bring the bad reputation to producers also damage the profit of consumers. For instance, the company Mitsubishi Motors, a series of its products have technical defect. However, it concealed the fact and therefore many traffic accidents caused by this drawback. The economic and spiritual damage was hardly compensated and until then the famous brand became the nightmare of the consumers.

Besides, scandal is absolutely not the effective way to focus people’s attention on problems except the speech and reform. Criticism and comment are the useful ways to draw public’s concentration. And these ways showing in newspapers as well as TV programs can be easily accepted by people in moral. At the same time, public can express their own opinions and discuss with others through these platforms like newspapers and TV programs. These more harmonious ways not only can focus people’s attention on problems but also solve the troubles better.

All in all, scandals may be useful to promote the healthy development in the realm of academia. However, in other fields like politics and business, scandals always bring bad effect and damage people’s profit. Therefore, through other better ways we can reap a bumper harvest in dealing with problems.
