TOPIC: ISSUE56 - "Governments should focus more on solving the immediate problems of today rather than trying to solve the anticipated problems of the future."

Should government focus more on solving the immediate problems of today rather than trying to solve the anticipated problems of the future? The speaker claims so, however, in my opinion, the immediate problems and the anticipated are equally important to our society, so the government should balance the focus on either of the problems.

On one hand, the governments should focus on the immediate problems, for the reason that they are emergent and relates to the stability of the society. Immediate problems, such as poverty, immediate mishap, political issues, and economical turbulence, if not properly dealed with, may cause serious results. For example, China suffered from a disaster last year- the earthquake in Si Chuan province. During that time, it became the most immediate problem calling the attentions of the whole nation, and of course, the government focused more on dealing with the emergency. Our premier Wen Jiabao went there at the first time, the media reported the conditions every hour, and a lot of soldiers were sent to the area to save people's life. I cannot imagine what will happen if the government does not focus on this problem, maybe more people will die or become homeless and our country will suffer turbulence. Understandably, the immediate problems surely deserve the government's urgent attention. Only when the government put the immediate problems on the center of their work can they make the society more effective and efficient.

On the other hand, the governments should have the long-term sights to not only consider the immediate problems but also try to solve the anticipated problems of the future. It is a misconception that the government can ignore the anticipated problems. If the government fails to prepare for the future it will cause disaster to its country in the long run. For example, look at the environment around us, with the development of modern science and technology, we human beings are become the master of the earth. To seek our own good, we excessively cut down the trees, letting the forests become dissert; we pollute the lakes, the rivers, and the seas resulting in the death of other creatures; we also excessively use the energy, letting them exhausted. If things go on like this, maybe one day we will have no water to drink, no energy to use, no house to live. It is also unfair to our descendants, do you have the heart to imagine them seek water to survival, seek energy to get warm and look up to the sky just want to see it blue. To make things better, I think it is time for the government to take the anticipated more serious. They should enact a “sustainable development” policy to solve these environmental problems. Furthermore, they should not only concern the contemporary lives of their people, but also consider more for their descendants.

In my observation, both the immediate problems and the anticipated problems relate to the survival and the prosperity of our society, and overstate either of them may cause serious problems.

TOPIC: ARGUMENT238 - The following appeared in a memorandum from the president of Mira Vista College to the college's board of trustees.

"At nearby Green Mountain College, which has more business courses and more job counselors than does Mira Vista College, 90 percent of last year's graduating seniors had job offers from prospective employers. But at Mira Vista College last year, only 70 percent of the seniors who informed the placement office that they would be seeking employment had found full-time jobs within three months after graduation, and only half of these graduates were employed in their major field of study. To help Mira Vista's graduates find employment, we must offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their résumés and interviewing skills."
WORDS: 432          TIME: 00:30:00          DATE: 2009-2-8 20:55:11

In this memo, the president of Mira Vista (MV) College recommends that MV should offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help their graduates find employment. The recommendation seems reasonable, since the president cites a comparison between MV and Green Mountain (GM) College, which has more business courses and more job counselors than does MV, and demonstrate that their graduates get more offers. However, close examine this recommendation, I find it logically unconvincing in several respects.

First of all, the president make a comparison that 90 percent of GM's graduates had job offers from prospective employers, but only 70 of our graduates who informed the placement office that they would be seeking employment. However, the president does not tell us the number of students in the two Colleges, perhaps MV has much more students than GM, then the data may has no value. In addition, the memo only says that the graduates in GM had job offers but not say they will accept the work, maybe the work is not satisfied their needs, on the contrary, the jobs offered go MV's graduates' are all what they want. If this is the case, the president cannot convince me that MV's graduates are hard to find jobs.

Secondly, even graduates in GM can easy to find jobs; the president also unfairly assumes it is due to the help of more business courses and more job counselors. However, the president may overlook a fact that the market is a function of providence and demand, so does the labor market. It is entirely possible that the majors studied by GM's graduates are closed related with the practice and demanded severely by the market so that they can easily find jobs, however, MV's graduates may mainly major in humanity, history or some other more theory disciplines. Without ruling out these possibilities, the president cannot convince me that offering more courses and computer technology will bring more job opportunities.

Even if GM's success is due to the business courses and more job counselors, the president also assumes that MV’s graduates’ defeat in job marker is caused by insufficient business courses and job counselors; however, the author does not provide any evidences to substantiate it. Besides the foregoing reasons, the ability of the students in their professional study also plays an important in job finding.

In sum, to better support the recommendation, the author should also provides further evidence to justify that MV’s graduates are really hard to find jobs and it is caused by the insufficient business courses and job counselors.

Should government focus more on solving the immediate problems of today rather than trying to solve the anticipated problems of the future? The speaker claims so, however, in my opinion, the immediate problems and the anticipated are equally important to our society, so the government should balance the focus on either of the problems.

On one hand, the governments should focus on the immediate problems, for the reason that they are emergent and relates(relate) to the stability of the society. Immediate problems, such as poverty, immediate mishap, political issues, and economical turbulence, if not properly dealed with, may cause serious results. Understandably, the immediate problems surely deserve the government's urgent attention. Only when the government put the immediate problems on the center of their work can they make the society more effective词汇不太妥当 and efficient.

On the other hand, the governments should have the long-term sights to not only consider the immediate problems but also try to solve the anticipated problems of the future(这一句有点重复,改成the government should have long-term sight to solve the anticipated…可能会简洁些。). It is a misconception that the government can ignore the anticipated problems. If the government fails to prepare for the future it will cause disaster to its country in the long run.这一句有语法错误 For example, look at the environment around us, with the development of modern science and technology, we human beings are become(becoming) the master of the earth. To seek our own good, we excessively cut down the trees, letting the forests become dissert; we pollute the lakes, the rivers, and the seas resulting in the death of other creatures; we also excessively use the energy, letting them exhausted. 文章开始提出要二者兼备,并分别说明重要性,最后总结主旨。整个结构比较清晰,但在最后结尾处有些单薄,最好能把合的部分写的丰满一些。文章中用词有时会不太恰当,可能还要加强一下。
