188. A new report suggests that men and women experience pain very differently from one another, and that doctors should consider these differences when prescribing pain medications. When researchers administered the same dosage of kappa opioids-a painkiller-to 28 men and 20 women who were having their wisdom teeth extracted, the women reported feeling much less pain than the men, and the easing of pain lasted considerably longer in women. This research suggests that kappa opioids should be prescribed for women whenever pain medication is required, whereas men should be given other kinds of pain medication. In addition, researchers should reevaluate the effects of all medications on men versus women.

The argument is well-presented, but not thoroughly well-reasoned. Through a survey during which men and women reacted differently towards the same dosage of kappa opioids, the argument for prescribing differently on men and women when they need painkiller and reevaluating the influences of all painkillers on men and women seems logica. However, the argument contains several facets that are questionable.

First, one problem of the argument is that since the study involved only 48 people it is impossible to draw any conclusion about the general populaton from it. Specifically, the argument overlooks other possible reasons why these particular women reported less pain than the men did. The women in the study might have a higher-than-everage pain threshold; controversely, the men in the study might have a lower-than-everage pain threshold. Or perhaps this groups of women are less prone to complain about pain than this group of men-due to their unusually stoical nature or their experience with painful medical procedures.

Aother problem with the argument is that it might overlooks other possible factors that might have contributed to the amount of pain these patients experienced. It is entirely possible that because of the difference of physical characters of men and women, women are generally need less dose of painkiller than men do, therefore the same dose of kappa opinids in the study is the reason why the drug works better on women. in addition, it is also possible that the the women use other kinds of drugs to help them to restrain the pain, or the group of men eat some food to counteract with kappa opioids they take. In short, the experiment is not conducted under a controlled environment where any other factors than might influence the result are the same. Subsequently, the result of the survey is questionable.

Even if one accepts the survey results, the argument remains qustionable. The argument concludes that whenever women need painkiller, kappa opioids is the best choice; but for men, doctors should consider other kinds of pain medication. But in the survey, the argument only take into account one type of pain, that is the pain when wisdom teeth extracted. Perhaps for women, kappa opioids only works well on teeth pain but not others, such as headache and stomachache. On the controry, for men, kappa opioids might be the best choice to relese other pain except teeth pain.

Moreover, the argument unnessarily claims that all medications should be reevaluated on the effects on women and men. In the survey, the only drug invovled is kappa opioids, and the result of the survey is not sufficient to prove that all medications work in different ways on men and women.

In conclusion, the argument, while it seems logical at firstm ahs several flaws as disscussed above. The argument could be imporved by citing a survey in which more people are involved and is performed under the controlled evironment. It could be further improved by making a resonable and cautious conclusion.
