As Jacques Rogge, the president of IOC, praised, Beijing Olympic Games was truly exceptional, which left every audience a long-lasting wonderful memory. Art, inspiring people in a different way, also provide us with lots of cherish treasure. In my opinion, we can neither easily claim which is more important, nor assert which should be spent more money on.

On one hand, art is an indispensable aspect for a nation to develop citizens’ culture and refinement. With the development of economy, we are able to visit museums to know about the history of humanity, attend concerts to appreicate the wonder of music, and lounge in galleries to enjoy the beauty of paintings. As various types of art can benefit us in both psychological and mental health, as well as elevate our feeling for the beauty of nature and humanity, it is worthy of asking for the government’s budget.

On the other hand, athletics is also an important affair to evaluate a nation’s development. Only people have strong and energetic bodies can they work efficiently and actively. It is athletics that countributes to people’s physical health, which is the most essential factor to high-standed quality of life. Since athletics plays such an unique role, the development of a nation’s sports in a sense stands for a country’s overall strength. As this reason, governments should spend as much money as they can to build up people’s health.


Moreover, art and athletics have some common charateristics, they are both transnational affairs, they can both rich people’s spare time of lives and they can both bring generous profits to tourism. In a word, art and athletics are not exclusive to each other.

As above reasons, I do not think it is meaningful to debate on such trifles --whether we should spend more money on art or on athletics. After all, people’s need are always advancing with times. If most citizen are in favor of holding an Olympic Games, athletics are certainly should be taken firstly into account on the budget. Otherwise, which will be allocated with more finicial resources should depends on circumstances.
