Someone has a good idea that all nations together establish a global university, in which students cope with the world's most persistent social problems. This idea has significant merits, since so many social problems today are suffered not merely in one nation, but in the whole world. So if these persistent problems can be solved, every nation in the earth will be benefited. However, though this idea is good, it is hard to carry out.

Admittedly, there are a wide amount of social problems in front of every nation all over the world in the modern age, from social problems to technological issues, from culture conflict to racial discrimination, and from economic crisis to environmental problems. Most of these persistent problems are far beyond one's country's ability. So it is desirable and even necessary to call every nation joining the process of solving these social problems, and the best way is support a global university, as the speaker asserts.

Besides, this kind of global university, to some extent, will superior to any other universities, since it really broke the limitation of academic boundary. In this kind of global university, countless excellent students come from different area in the world that can bring a wide variety of views and opinion to the most persistent social problems. What's more, one of the difficult problems is just the culture confliction. If students from different countries and different cultures can study peacefully and harmoniously in one university, then the cozy atmosphere in the school will be a good example of dealing with many problems on confliction.

However, though this global university will bring all of us many advantages and might be able to solve all of the persistent social problems, the reality of establishing the school is far from easy. First, we need to realize the fact that not every nation in the world is able to support this kind of global university. For example, many countries in Africa are very poor, whose people are still starving and therefore it is hard from them to support the school like other advanced countries. Considering the quality of building this global university, every country should pay some efforts to this construction. So the question that whether all nations can afford this construction should be taken into account in the first place.

In addition, whether all the fruits from the global university can be equally shared by all nations also are a hard issue. The very realistic question is that where this global school is built? Answers may be different, yet no matter where the school is, the direct benefited will be the host country. Also considering present world's trend, people naturally prefer going to advanced countries where people have high living standard. Thus, this global university itself will generate a big problem of the equality. Besides, the local government may also play a role in the school's researches, which only will negatively influence the process in the school.

To sum up, few of us will deny that it is really a good idea of establishing a global university. However, the negative effects and potential problems associated with this global school also need to be considered, including the cost, the location, and other political factors outside academic field. If one day the global school really be made, the achievements should be equally shared by all nations, so that our world can become more and more beautiful.

题目:ARGUMENT9 - The following appeared in a memorandum from a dean at Omega University.

"Fifteen years ago, Omega University implemented a new procedure that encouraged students to evaluate the teaching effectiveness of all their professors. Since that time, Omega professors have begun to assign higher grades in their classes, and overall student grade averages at Omega have risen by thirty percent. Potential employers apparently believe the grades at Omega are inflated; this would explain why Omega graduates have not been as successful at getting jobs as have graduates from nearby Alpha University. To enable its graduates to secure better jobs, Omega University should now terminate student evaluation of professors."

In this memo, the dean of Omega University recommends the school to terminate student evaluation of professor so that its graduates can find better jobs. To strengthen this recommendation, the dean cites following facts:(1) Omega professors began to give students higher grades after this new procedure; (2) Omega graduates are less successful at getting jobs than Alpha's students. (3) Employers believer the grades at Omega are inflated. This argument suffers from several logic flaws, and is therefore unpersuasive.

First of all, the dean commits the fallacy of “After this, Therefore, Because of this" in assuming that it is the evaluating procedure implemented by Omega that leads to the higher grades of its overall students.
The arguer fails to consider other alternative explanations. For example, perhaps since that time, the school also improved the quality of school's education; or perhaps the school raises the enrolling standard, so that the students' levels, on average, are much higher than before. In short, without ruling out these possibilities, the arguer cannot justifiably establish the causal relationship between the student evaluation and the increased grades among students.

In addition, the arguer unfairly assumes that the high grades among students is the reason that why Omega graduates have not been as succeed in getting jobs as have students from Alpha. The arguer fails to take into account the different situation between the two schools that may contribute to this result. It is entirely possible that the number of available jobs in Alpha’s area is much more than that in Omega's city, so that students in Aplhpa University are much easier to get jobs. Without proving that all the relevant circumstances between the two schools are same, any broad conclusion based on this assumption is unwarranted at best.

Finally, even the foregoing assumption are substantiated, there is not necessary for the Omega University to terminate student evaluation of professors. One the one hand, the arguer ignores the possible benefits this evaluation may have. For instance, the professors can get wishful feedbacks from students through this procedure, and which are beneficial for professors to improve their educational plans. On the other hand, there might be some other methods, rather than terminate the evaluation, that can contribute graduates' job-finding. For instance, the school can add some job introduction to the curriculum, or it can provide the job-service to its students as well.
