TOPIC: ARGUMENT242 - The following appeared as an editorial in the student newspaper of Groveton College.

"To combat the recently reported dramatic rise in cheating among college and university students, these institutions should adopt honor codes similar to Groveton's, which calls for students to agree not to cheat in their academic endeavors and to notify a faculty member if they suspect that others have cheated. Groveton's honor code replaced an old-fashioned system in which students were closely monitored by teachers and an average of thirty cases of cheating per year were reported. The honor code has proven far more successful: in the first year it was in place, students reported twenty-one cases of cheating; five years later, this figure had dropped to fourteen. Moreover, in a recent survey conducted by the Groveton honor council, a majority of students said that they would be less likely to cheat with an honor code in place than without."

The writer of the editorial suggested that other schools should adopt the Honor Codes to prevent students from cheating in exams. He or she considered the number which decreased after Groveton College installed the Honor Codes system and a survey by Groveton honor council which indicates that students were less likely to cheat with honor code in place than without. But before jumping to conclusion that Honor Code is universally useful for all students, some other alternatives should be taken into consideration

First of all, did the Honor Codes really effectively suppress the cheating? The Honor Codes demands students promise not to cheat and to notify teachers when others do. It's not a coercive order, not everyone will obey the codes. In fact, I think it's more likely that students prefer to cheat more propitiously as not to be labeled as “Dishonor”, and thus the number declined, than really abandoning the cheating way. It’s easy to understand because the students who cheat in exams are unprincipled, and the honor codes have little impact on them.

Even if the honor codes decreased the number of cheating, the editorial was to quick to conclude that other schools should adopt them, too. There are other factors affect the cheating numbers. Why would students cheat in exams? If they could pass them themselves, no one would take cheating into consideration. Maybe the curriculum is too hard, or maybe the exams are arranged so unreasonably close. In addition, 5 years is long enough to improve the learning environment on campus, maybe the cheating number reduced because students are more focused on their curriculum instead of entertainment like videogames, parties and shopping.

In addition, the survey showed that students were less likely to cheat, it’s possible that students in Groveton are more integrity and honest. But when the honor codes are adopted by other universities in which students are not as honest as those in Groveton, the situation could be totally different, and especially when the old-fashioned system was replaced by the new but self-discipline one.

To conclude, whether the honor codes helped decrease the cheating number is questionable, and even if it is, there are still other alternatives involved. And before suggesting others to adopt the honor codes, a comparison between the possibly more integrity and honest Groveton students and those of other colleges should be provided. Lacking background information, the writer fails to convince the council members of other universities to sigh the honor codes purchasing draft.

The writer of the editorial suggested that other schools(不知道是不是应该说明those institutions with serious cheating problems还是可以略掉)should adopt the Honor Codes to prevent students from cheating in exams. He or she considered the number which decreased after Groveton College installed the Honor Codes system and a survey by Groveton honor council which indicates that students were less likely to cheat with honor code in place than without(似乎用连词连接下句比较合适,否则此句有些突兀). But before jumping to conclusion that Honor Code is universally useful for all students(students or colleges?), some other alternatives should be taken into consideration.

First of all, did the Honor Codes really effectively suppress the cheating? The Honor Codes demands students promise not to cheat and to notify teachers when others do. It's not a coercive order, not everyone will obey the codes. In fact, I think it's more likely that students prefer to cheat more propitiously as not to be labeled as “Dishonor”, and thus the number declined(个人以为这里多余,且易造成误解) , than really abandoning the cheating way. It’s easy to understand because the students who cheat in exams are unprincipled, and the honor codes have little impact on them.

In addition, the survey showed that students were less likely to cheat(you don't need to replicate your restatement here, change to directly pointing out what's wrong with the survey would be better), it’s possible that students in Groveton are more integrity and honest. But when the honor codes are adopted by other universities in which students are not as honest as those in Groveton, the situation could be totally different, and especially when the old-fashioned system was replaced by the new but self-discipline one.

Lacking background information, the writer fails to convince the council members of other universities to sigh the honor codes purchasing draft(?).

观点都是大众观点,但也没办法,就那么几个错,很难装出新酒来。文章开头提到的survey后面没有分析,私以为这个靶还是应该打得,不打白不打。
好话:用词基本到位,学习了...
