This memo recommends in order improving profits, their stores should decrease the stocking imported cheese and concentrate mainly on domestic cheeses. To support this recommendation, the arguer points out the five newest stores’ best –selling cheese were all domestic cheese from Wisconsin. Additionally, the arguer also cites a survey indicates the preference for domestic cheese was increasing.
However, close scrutiny of the evidence reveals that it accomplishes little toward supporting the arguer's claim, as discussed below.
First of all, the mere fact that the five best-selling newest stores’ well-selling can't represent all the stores. It’s possible that these stores are located at Wisconsin where the native resident prefer cheese made with the Wisconsin style. Moreover, well-selling can’t prove a high profit, perhaps this cheese of the new store do some sells promotion with a lower price to attract more consumers, and such trend will not last long. Naturally, the evidence the author provides is insufficient to support the conclusion drawn from it.
Secondly, the results of Cheeses of the World magazine survey are not necessarily representative of the overall population of consumers. There is no evidence to suggest that this survey is effective unless it can be shown that the number of consumers being interviewed and the whether this survey being investigated carefully and comprehensively. Again, this magazine’s background have not been introduced, it’s possible that the readers of this magazine are some people whose specialty is producing cheese, and then the willing of this population cannot represent all the consumers, so, the result that subscribers’ preference for domestic cheese is increasing is completely unwarranted.
Thirdly, what the arguer fails to understand is that there are many ways to improve profits that the cost of cheese inventory is so little. For example, the chin stores can make profits by adding some new services or decrease the cost of transportation by delete some complex process. Moreover, common sense tells us that the cost of domestic and imported cheese’s stoking are not so different at all, lacking evidence that links profits increasing to imported cheese discontinuing stocking, it is presumptuous to suggest that they should concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses, may be this wrong decision can lead to a big hit to these stores.
Taking into account all this factors, we may safely draw the conclusion that the author's evidence lends little credible support to her claim. To persuade me that the best way to improve profits is to discontinue stocking imported cheeses and pay more attention on domestic cheeses, the author would need to provide clear evidence that the selling situation of cheeses in most stores, and that the survey can be credible. Finally, to better evaluate the author's claim we would need more information about the way to improve the stores’ profits. We would also need more information about the cost of imported cheeses’ stocking compared with other stuff.
