TOPIC: ARGUMENT101 - The following appeared in a memo from the president of a company that makes breakfast cereals.
"In a recent study, subjects who ate soybeans at least five times per week had significantly lower cholesterol levels than subjects who ate no soy products. By fortifying our Wheat-O cereal with soy protein, we can increase sales by appealing to additional consumers who are concerned about their health. This new version of Wheat-O should increase company profits and, at the same time, improve the health of our customers."

Grounding the a recent study, assuming that the soy protein contained in soybeans have the effect that lower cholesterol levels significantly, supposing that the product Wheat-O cereal fortified with soy protein will appeal the consumers who are concerned about their health and increase sales, then synthesizing this two hypothesizes, the author accordingly suggests that this new version of Wheat-O should increase company profit. At first glance it is well reasoned, however, there leaves several unconvincing assumption in close scrutiny.
Firstly, The author falsely draw the conclusion that the effect lowering cholesterol levels significantly is due to the protein of the soybean. The author offers no evidence to substantiate this assumption. There are lots kinds of compound contained in soybean, like protein, vitamins, fat and so on. It is probably that a kind of compound except protein produce this effect, for that matter, the soy protein may raise the cholesterol levels. The author cannot justifiably conclude that the compounded product will decrease the cholesterol levels.
Secondly, even assuming it is the thing that the soy protein can lower cholesterol levels significantly, the author cannot deduce that the fortified product will appeal to additional consumers who are concerned about their health. Since the author tells no evidence to show the age level of consumers, It is possible that the consumers are mainly young who are not concerned about their cholesterol levels. In addition, common sense tell us that cholesterol can produce hormone and other substance that necessary to our body, for that matter it may be not wise to make the cholesterol levels too low. Without eliminating these possibilities, it is unsubstantiated to draw the conclusion that more consumers will be appealed by Wheat-O cereal and the sales will be increased.
Finally, even if sales are increased in the course of fortifying Wheat-O cereal with soy protein, the company would not necessarily be profitable as a result. Profitability is a function of both revenue and expense. The memo provides no information about the costs involved in manufacturing and distributing. Thus it is entirely possible that the company's cost of purifying the protein contained in soybean, adding the protein to the product, or advertising to attract more consumers, might render it unprofitable despite its popularity. Deprived of weighing revenue against expenses the argument's conclusion is premature at best.
Overall, the reasoning behind fortifying Wheat-O cereal with soy protein to increase company profits and, at the same time, improve the health of customers seems logical as presented above. However, before any final decisions are made about the new version, the president should evaluate all possible alternatives and well ponder the revenue against expenses to gain the profit largely.
TOPIC: ISSUE221 - "The chief benefit of the study of history is to break down the illusion that people in one period of time are significantly different from people who lived at any other time in history."

To discover a phenomenon that people are always alike in themselves in terms of some ways is a benefit of the study of history indeed, but there are still lots of difference between people lived in various period of time. Moreover, regarding my observance, the chief benefit of studying history is always not a single substantive benefit.
Human beings in themselves are similar from all over the world and through the whole history. The nature of we human beings are consisted of desires, motives, fear, brave, curiosity, and etc. The curiosity driving a caveman to eat a crab is fundamental the same to which generating a new method of clinical remedy. It is the realization of the similar basic human natures that benefit us to deal our social problems nowadays.
While, despite the similar basic human natures, there are also lots of differences between people lived in one period of time and another. The achievements of science, the developing technology, and the civilization of the whole society are all far different to our predecessor. As the famous physicist Newton once said 'If I have been able to see further, it was only because of I stood on the shoulder of giants', this well-known saying makes us known that our science and technology are pushing on and different to the predecessor's. In addition, according to Bible, there are countless massacres committed in ancient times and a low level of productivity while the massacres are seldom occurs and sever forbidden in the contemporary age with a high ones. These fact all reflect the difference between the people in various times, and finding these difference benefit us the same to the formal one.
Finally, the chief benefit of studying history is various from the change of the users and the surroundings in which we use it. We have been told that history is a science combined with detection, arrangement, summarizing and application. What the final purpose of study of history is to apply the principle to our life and the future. Various academics need various experiences. Philosophers discover the nature of human from the same of people lived in various time, politicians make the society more harmonious from the rise and fall of dynasties, and scientists push on the technology with the gift of the predecessors.
To sum up, while there are lots of benefits we can acquired from the study of history, the most adaptable is always the best. |
