In this statement, the speaker considers that breaking down the illusion that the people in one period has great differences with the people lived at any other time is the chief benefit of the study of history. I support the speaker doesn’t understand why we study the history completely. Learning the history has many benefits, including mentioned above, but it is not chief benefit at all.

For the first, the study of the history does help us break down the illusion mentioned in the statement. It can help us get the knowledge of people’s living environments, including the custom, the culture, the economy and so on, in different time. All these knowledge give us a hand to understand the people in that time, and cut down the difference between us. Therefore, the study of the history of the history truly breaks down the illusion. However, it has more functions which maybe more important.

As an adage said, “history is a mirror”. For a person, learning the history may help he/she to avoid to make mistakes which may make he/she feel regret very much in his/her later life. For a country, learning the history may help it becomes stronger and stronger. Take the china for example, from the history, We Chinese people have learned that living in a close environment is not suitable for the whole country. Because of the close, we have lost our regime in the 1900s. So, in the recent 30 years china is trying its best to open to the world, and this action really takes an important effort in Chinese development.

For the last, learning the history help the human understand the process of the developing of the whole society, and it can help us to understand which society is a better one, to know how we can improve our living conditions, to choose a better way for ourselves. With the history, we can predict and prepare for the coming of the depression of the economy, to prevent the whole world losing too much.

Concluded from above, the study of the history has so many functions, if we just pay our attention to the single function mentioned in the statement, we may lose much in our daily life.

In this statement, the speaker wants to persuade the president of the company to admit to fortify their Wheat-O cereal with soy protein, with the aid of increasing company profit. However, the speaker makes at least three mistakes in this presentation.

Firstly, the speaker tries to show that soy protein is good for the health of the human by using a study which shows that subjects who ate soybeans at least five times per week had significantly lower cholesterol levels than subject who didn’t ate. However, is the study reliable? Maybe not. We don’t know where the study is come from. If the study is just a student work, its result maybe is not accurate completely. In other aspect, how many people took part in the study? if the number of the people in the study is very few and all of them just come from one area, the study is also not reliable.

Secondly, is the reason that people have significantly lower cholesterol levels just they ate soy protein? The speaker doesn’t give the needed information to support this. Maybe they also ate other things which are the direct reason that they have lower cholesterol.

Lastly, if the company fortifies the soy protein to the new version of Wheat-O, should it really increase the profits? In order to fortify the soy protein to the Wheat-O, the company should invest more on the research of new version. But the price of the product may not increase any more, so the company’s profits are not improved but depressed.

In a word, there are lots of problems should be proved. If the speaker want to persuade the president to admit the fortifier of soy protein, he/she should present more provement.
