Rituals and ceremonies help define a culture. Without them, societies or groups of people have a diminished sense of who they are.

Just like language, art, belief and behavior of the majority, rituals and ceremonies play important roles in composing the culture of a specific society or group. If the define can be interpreted into the term as explanation and component, I generally agree with the assertion that rituals and ceremonies help define culture and maintain people’s sense of who they are, except some extreme situations.

First of all, let’s speculate on the functionalities and effection of rituals and ceremonies. As a representive measure of culture, what do people eventually obtain through the rituals and ceremonies? Simply put, the answer is memory, which is enshrined in the particularly celebrated methods. To be contrary, just as one extraordinary philosopher ever said, history has the destiny to be forgotten. If we don’t rely on the terms of special measures, we easily leave off the circumstances happened yesterday and are newly enmeshed in the net of trivial affairs which will be overlooked once again in tomorrow. Rituals and ceremonies, which can be classified into these measures, effectively identify the valuable moments and events for either people themselves or their groups, even societies, and lead to themselves to be remembered due to its hollowed process and significant sense.

With the premise that rituals and ceremonies create memories, to be further, the memories are for people to get the sense of who they are. Consider, what do we remember every day? From students who remember the academic knowledge, to doctors who remember their patients, to NBA players who remember the basketball skills, it is apparently that people care about and tends to remember the things regarding to their interests and futures. Hence, from the commencement of new semester, to the honored ceremonies at the end of years, to the VIP celebrating activities, diversities people coming from diversities vocations deepen their sense of what directions they are working on, which positions they are aiming at, and inevitably summarized as who they are, which can be widely substantiated in both from the perspective of individuals and societies.

To be specific for individuals, rituals and ceremonies contribute for people to establish and retrospect their interpersonal relationships, as well as their social responsibilities. Firstly, everybody has the experience to join the birthday banquet, the wedding ceremony, and the funeral. These events, undoubtedly, help us review and remember our ancestors, lovers and friends. This is where we come from and who we are living around. Secondly, the inauguration ceremony of the new Presidents in U.S are always splendid as all the people are expecting that the new leaders of this country can realize the tremendous responsibilities that they should take, which is who the presidents are. Thus, without ceremonies recoding these important moments, individuals will to some extent have their sense of their positions diminished.

Similarly, for societies and groups, rituals and ceremonies represent the respect, beliefs and spirit. National day is to appreciate the striving efforts from the ancestors to approach the peace of today. Christians go to church every week to definite their believes guiding them away from the fussy trifles of the roaring world. These ceremonies help people identify the country and the group they belong to, which is another perspective of who they are.

Admittedly, besides rituals and ceremonies, there are other ways help people to recognize their values including communications between friends, praise of superiors, and so forth. And also, in some countries with extreme militarism or un-cultivated tribes, vicious rituals or ceremonies exist. But both the circumstances don’t neglect the functionalities of the role of the rituals and ceremonies play concerning the maintenance of the sense for people of who they are.

To sum up, I generally agree with the assertion with multi-perspective considerations and illustrations, from individuals to countries, and from different vocations in this world. Except some extreme examples, rituals and ceremonies, contribute in a positive way for human being to define their culture, and to remember who they are.

TOPIC: ARGUMENT20 - The following appeared in a letter to the editor of the Balmer Island Gazette.

"The population of Balmer Island increases to 100,000 duing the summer months. To reduce the number of accidents involving mopeds and pedestrians, the town council of Balmer Island should limit the number of mopeds rented by each of the island's six moped and bicycle rental companies from 50 per day to 30 per day during the summer season. By limiting the number of rentals, the town council is sure to attain the 50 percent reduction in moped accidents that was achieved last year in the neighboring island of Torseau, when Torseau's town council enforced similar limits on moped rentals."
