TOPIC: ISSUE170 - "The surest indicator of a great nation is not the achievements of its rulers, artists, or scientists, but the general welfare of all its people."

In diplomatic words, all of the nations in the world are great. Then how shall we define the greatness of a nation? The speaker asserts that the general welfare of all its people are the surest indicator rather than the achievements of its people. Admittedly, the general welfare is an important facet of the greatness of a nation. The achievements of its people are the indispensable factor involved when we determine the greatness of the nation.
Undoubtedly, the general welfare of the country is a necessary factor to be considered in the decision of weather a country is great. The general welfare, broadly defined as general living conditions of its people, is a basic issue for every nation. It is generally accepted that the society enjoy the higher level of civilization will have better general living conditions. The general welfare of its people, such as the basic income assurance for the disabled and the poor, free elementary education and even the medical insurances for the overall population, can somehow indicate the civilization level of the nation. We can't image that a nation, while most of its people are struggling against famine and poverty, can call itself a great nation without shame.
However, the general welfare conditions are not the surest indicator of the greatness of the nation. Whether the general welfare in a country is good or not bases on the comparison of nations in the similar historical time. With the development of the human civilization, people live a better life. Even a ordinary American enjoys a higher living condition than John Rockefellor, who is the richest man in America in 1910s. Because Rockefellor couldn't benefit from so much convenience and meidcal services which ordinary people can enjoy nowadays. Similarly, it is obvious that we enjoy a better general welfare than those lived in ancient times. Can we definately claim that the nation nowadays is great while the nation in history was not? Furthermore, it is entirely possible that the nation in the future will enjoy a higher welfare level. If we took the welfare as the surest indicator, then none of nations are really great because the welfare level is not so high as it will be in the future.
To avoid this ridiculous logic, we shall take other factors into accounts when we determine such a complicated issue. The achievements of its people will play a major role as a matter of course. These splendid achievements which contributed to the progress of human civilization will certainly improve the reputation and greatness of the nation.
We usually regard the Britain as a great nation for its so many heroes and their outstanding works in science and technology such as Newton and his laws in physics. The great philosophers such as Kant, Hegel, Karl Marx will contribute to the greatness of Germany. Similarly, the Confucius along with his great wisdom and the four great inventions including the paper and compass will ensure the greatness of China. The achievements of its people will surely enlight the life of its people, instead of simple survival.
In summary, although the general welfare is an important aspect to consider, the achievements of the nations' people will be a surer-if not the surest- indicator of the greatness of the nation. A great nation will surely ensure his people’s survival, but he will show more interests on the truly living of its people. |
