208"The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."

During the issue, we intend to discuss how to tell much about a society’s ideas and values. At first we should define what are a society’s ideas and values. In common sense a society’s ideas and values are the directions of social changes, which are consciously chose by a society. For example if a society’s ideas and values tend to pursue fairness, impartiality, justice, freedom, equality, fraternity, democracy, the rule of law, human rights, harmony and so on, the society will gradually develop into these nature of modern civilized society. Conversely, if a society still follows the old times values or directions, it is not may develop into a modern civilized society, or even from the history of civilization to the barbaric regression.

In my opinion, the core values and ideas of a society are showed in the leading political party that it promotes the society forward. As we know the stronger one crown, generally the leading party stands for the ongoing directions of advanced productive power; of advanced culture; of the profits of most folks in that society. Or, it will be replaced by another more capable leading party. Therefore the leading party shows us a society’s core values and ideas. We can have a through conviction of a society’s core values and ideas by getting familiar with the contents of 3 following aspects. Firstly, we should know well about typical books written by representative people of a leading party. Because a typical book can show the essence of a representative people of a leading party who has the leading power in the party, hence we can realize the true meaning of the directions. For example, “the Mao Zedong Thought”, “Deng Xiaoping Theory” well explained the directions of Communist party of China, and then sowed the values and ideas of a society about building a strong new China.  What’s more, we can tell much about a society’s core ideas and values by observing the appearance and behaviors of its leading party’s representatives. For example, from Barack Obama’s appearance and behaviors, we know that America is a country that it advocates free, equality and capability that those values and ideas inspire every young Americans seeks for his or her American dreams. In addition, from critic’s critique of the leading party, we can better understand the society’s directions. For instance many critiques of Iraq War, reveals wild ambitions hidden in the core values and ideas of America, for the original aim of the leading party is the rich oil in Iraq.

Therefore, to tell much about a society’s ideas and values, we should consider more aspects, not just as what the author said, which may lead that we can not see the woods for the trees. In other words, we should have a systematic consideration process about its directions.

Last but not least, some values and ideas may disappear by updating leading party. Whether they can be spread generation after generation, depend on the results they bring to the society. For example, the Confucianism which began spread from Han dynasty, can be used to enhance the stability and unity of Chinese nation, thus now it still a direction of Chinese modern society.

from my point of view, this article is to some extent off the topic. The issue is to discuss whether you can tell much about the society's ideas and values from the look, appearance and act. You should at least analysis the situation about what the look, appearance and act reveals. Then you can expand to some more aspects.
But now what you are discussing mainly focus on whether a group of people representing the majority's opinion.
