Education is one of the key worlds of our society. Whether the education we provide to our descendents are effective determine the destiny of the whole world. Many people may take it for granted that education specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests will be more effective just as the speaker asserts. As for me, a truly effective should balance the traditional general education and the specifically designed education.

I concede the speaker’s assertion insofar as that the education specially designed according to the specific needs and interests of students will help to stimulate the striving and develop their distinct potentials and talents. The greatest ancient Chinese philosopher and educator Confucius has mentioned the notion (and I translated) that "teachers should teach according to the students' talents and demands." In the light of this, the students will much more actively engaged in subjects they have strong interests or needs, which will make it more possible for them to get effective education. After disobeying the willing of his family and pursing his own interests, Darwin finally came to success in the fields he loved. In this sense, a education system meet the specific demands and interests of the students will help to cultivate the future successful students in certain fields.

However, attractive the specifically designed education is, we cannot overlook the indispensable role played by the traditional general education. Limited by their knowledge and experiences, the students may give up the courses seemingly useless or they aren't interested in, which might in fact play a vital role in cultivating a fully developed graduate. Humanities such as history, philosophy seem to be of no apparent help to the future careers of students who major in science. But they help a lot to build right personalities and establish the general view of human civilization. Effective education should cultivate the specialists with comprehensive quality. A specialist in certain field without rounded knowledge structure may be limited in his study. Sometimes it is even dangerous for their shortcoming in personalities and morality. Then it is no strange that students in excellent university such as Harvard and MIT are required to attend general education courses.

Furthermore, the education system designed to meet specific needs and interests is beyond the range of educational resources at present. Considering the gigantic number of students who need education, it is almost surreal to claim that we can use the limited education resources to satisfy the various needs and interests of the students. In some developing countries, when the extreme poverty, famine and basic medical service are still the urgent social problems, it seems lavish to establish such kind of education system.

Hence, it is nature that an effective education should involve both general education and specifically designed education. Although complete liberty is not available, our education institutes should provide more autonomy to students as long as the essential compulsory courses are guaranteed. To some extent, it is both ineffective and infeasible to establish the education system satisfy the individual needs and interests.
