DATE: 8/4/2009 07:49:04
As an important component of the outcome of human intelligence, art witnessed the development of the mankind history. Gradually along with the progress of societies, art has been playing different roles with their diversities of representing ways. From expressing the direct emotions and personal dreams of the artists themselves, to revealing the hidden ideas and impulses inside the society, to serve the thought and volition of authorities, art has conveyed multifaceted approach of missions, not only just like the statement in this issue.
Since ancient time, when art was originated, art has partly been utilized to express the simple, inner emotions and personal dreams, rather than necessarily associated with the aspect of societies . From the beginning, art was generally a means to simply bring people pleasure and entertainment. When people heard a happy song or saw a painting with combination of colors so beautiful, they were able to put their struggle pains in life aside and gain some feeling of happiness. In turn, more and more artists got inspires with similar purpose and art was bestowed the vigor to express the personal emotions of artists themselves. One may look at the example of the Sunflower series paintings of Vincent Van Gogh, without relationship to specific ideas of the society, instead, it represents the concept of hope, dream and longing to future life of the creator himself. Equally, the Symphony Fate of Beethoven shows the resistance when facing the challenge of destiny.
Countless art works are with the significance of the virtues of human being, with the struggle, persistence, braveness and so forth.
Along with mature and development of the society concept, art has undoubtedly undertaken the responsibilities to reveal the hidden ideas inside the society.
On one hand, art reflects the public common consciousness. When human history entered a time with political organization and group and national characteristic, common recognition together with communication and daily activities in particular scope emerged. Then artists stand out to express these feeling. Many movies about disasters reveal the ideas on rousing public attention to the worries toward future on the background of increasing environment pollution. On the other hand, art arouses original ideas to solve some requires of the society.
An apt illustration here is the publishment of the book “Un souvenir de Solferino”. Based on describing the spotting the deplorable situations of injured soldiers in wars, it aroused the attention of the society and then the Red-Cross Organization was gradually established. Therefore, in revealing both the full-grown and potential ideas of society, art contributes to integrate and express them out with particular ways.
The arts can even promote social movement and generate social revolution. Art works are usually very welcomed by the public, and with the sentiments and thoughts in them, they can touch people deeply and infuse them with the same feeling, which may be hardly achieved by any great leader. An example to illustrate this point is the novel Uncle Tom's Cabin. This novel has a profound effect on attitudes towards African Americans and slavery in the United States. It is even an important factor leading to the American Civil War. It is said that at the start of the Civil War, Lincoln met Stowe, the author, and said Stowe "is the little lady who made this big war". The little lady with a powerful novel can make a big war, which can readily show the strength of the arts.
However, the arts are also significantly influenced by the society. Artists always live within a society, and the thoughts of the society surely have some influence on the creation. Sometimes the society is not free and opes enough, and the government strictly controls the creation to make the arts serve for the government. At such circumstance, artists have no freedom to create works according to their own thoughts. Instead, their creation is totally controlled by the government. This is typical in Cultural Revolution in China, during which only the so-called eight model plays was permitted, which always praise communism and revolution. All the other forms of arts were strictly controlled. People who violated the rules for art would be punished seriously. In that period, the free creation of art completely died out, let alone revealed hidden ideas and impulses.
