Grounding on the preliminary research conducted by two doctors, the author comes to the conclusion that all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain ought to take antibiotics as a part of the treatment. However, the reasoning process is flawed in several major aspects.
Primarily, to make comparesion between two groups, the author should ensure every factor related to the study is the same. Without any detailed information of the patients, such as age, sex, health condition and so on, the author could not convince me that the two groups of patients are comparable. For insurance, maybe patients in first group are comparatively younger on average than that of the second group. Younger people, with the superior condition in health, could possiblily accelerate the process of coverage. Moreover, perhaps the patients in first group suffers from less serious illness than that of the second group.
Next, the patients are treated by doctors in different fields. As a common sense, patient's recovery is related greatly to the doctor's experience and expertise. For that matter, Dr.Newland, who is specialized in sports medicine, might be better at dealing with muscle strain patients than Dr. Alton who might has no experience in this field.
Additionally, the author also takes it for granted that sugar pills has neutral without any explanation. As we know, sugar is the cause of some illness such as diabetes. we are not informed of how many sugar pills they take each day, it is quite possible that sugar can slow down the patient's recovery if taken too much or with other medicine. Without evidence of the assumption's reliability, the author can not convince me that sugar has nothing to do with patient's recovery.
Finally, the argument assumes that the conclusion drew from the study are representative of the overall people who suffer from muscle strain. Yet the author fails to cover other alternatives .For insurance, we all know some people are allergic to antibiotics, taking in antibiotics may bring these people in danger. Thus, the conclusion that patients with muscle strain should take antibiotic is not trustable, even dangerous in a way.
To sum up, I would suspend my judgment about the reliability of this argument until the author can provide more details about the study. |
