No one can deny the value of education: to impart knowledge, to exercise practical skills, or to develop personalities. with all these in mind, however, I would like to argue that the most important goal for education is to teach people how to educate themselves. Knowledge, practical skills or certain personality can become out of date as time passes by, especially in the modern society where change is the main theme of life, but the ability to refresh themselves will help individuals to keep progressing.

Firstly, with the ability to educate themselves, individuals can update their storage of knowledge and keep abreast of cutting-edge information. This shows its merit in nowadays’ society where individuals can easily be left behind if they keep sticking in their former accumulation. For example, one of friends, an outstanding student in my class, used to perform well in all of our classes and finally got a job as a computer programmer after graduation. Since the position provided him a decent salary, he got satisfied and thus lost the awareness of learning new things. After two year, when one day he was assigned to deal with an emergency, he found he was so unfamiliar with the current situation of the company and the industry. It goes without saying that the project went bankrupt and my friend was sure to take the negative consequence.

Analogously, the ability to refresh themselves can help individuals to equip themselves with up-to-date practical skills instead of relying on a set of unchangeable rules. I can still remember when I was a journalist for a newspaper, I needed to participate in regular training to get myself familiar with advanced technology, such as new cameras, editing machines or recording equipment. It’s my experience of learning in school that teaches me to always keep abreast of new developments in a certain area， which contributes to my achievements today.

Moreover, someone might assume that education should be most advocated for its goal to develop personalities, the influence of which is more extensive and long-lasting than knowledge of certain subjects or practical skills. However, the development of personalities should always be proceeding. One can never achieve a perfect personality at a given time, let alone when he graduates. In other words, as individuals reflect on his belief, values or goals at different phase of life, he might have different expectation for himself. in this situation, it’s important for one to modify the personality to achieve his fulfilment.

In sum, though knowledge, practical skills and personalities imparted through education owns their values, it’s the ability to refresh ourselves that should be of most merits . thus, I believe that the most important goal of education is to teach people how to educate themselves.
