This letter is designed to encourage potential applicants to think about their life and career paths and their connection to the choices of graduate programs. There will be more letters closer to the primary application season where I will discuss:
1. How to research each program,
2. How to think about your CV/resume and sharing your experiences, and
3. How to brainstorm for material to include in your personal statements.]
Anyone who is interested in applying to graduate school in the United States,
My name is Ryland, and I am a US lawyer who is currently obtaining his PhD in media economics and policy. I’ve had a variety of different research, teaching, writing, editing, and other professional experiences, and if you’re curious about them, you are welcome to browse through my LinkedIn profile. Yanyan and I have helped many non-native English speakers with the process of deciding to which graduate schools they should apply and have provided revision suggestions and editing of personal statements, CVs, and resumes. My job and your application’s chances are influenced heavily by three somewhat abstract factors.
First, you must give some idea of what makes you passionate and excited! In the materials personal statements you give, the committee must get a sense of your personality. I have received many personal statements that are too bland and without personality for the admissions committee to create an estimate in their minds about how a particular applicant will fit in with other admitted students, and those are no doubt the hardest for me to improve or fine tune, which in turn leads to lower acceptance rates. I have also read some personal statements that are perhaps too full of personality, but it is much easier to edit down entertaining and quirky things while still letting the best parts of your personality shine through.
Second, and somewhat related to the first, you must have some idea what makes you want to go into graduate school! No matter how passionate or interesting you are, if you do not know why you want a particular career, the admissions committee will sense it and reject your application. My most difficult clients are individuals who really don’t know why they want to go into any particular direction and are simply willing to attend any school or vaguely related specialization. Each department wants to have a sense that you will really use the educational experience they provide to develop your dream career. When you don’t know what you want to do with your life, you haven’t given me that dream story of why you want to spend two years of your life and sometimes $100,000+ on your education, and without it, I have to use weaker, more generic arguments and vague claims that only work sometimes. I have earned admissions for most of these people, but sadly, I worry about whether they have really thought enough about their decisions and whether they will be happy in the long run. Please, for your sake, really reflect upon your own dreams, hopes, and career aspirations before you decide upon which schools you would like to attend. The answers you find within yourself will serve as the backbone to your personal statements.
Third, the more you know about the schools and programs you would like to attend, the better your chances will be in the application. Each graduate program has its own particular strengths, educational philosophy, and desired mix of incoming students, which makes the application process a challenge to everyone involved. That is why you (or we) need to spend a substantial amount of time researching each individual program. This customizing process is often time-consuming, but it is necessary to maximize each application’s chance of success. My hardest clients have not really thought about why they want to apply to each program, have performed little or no research about the programs they are applying to, have perhaps written entirely too short or relatively unrelated personal statements for too many unrelated programs, and have strange requirements and opinions about how personal statements should be written. I spend most of my time on these and try as much as I can to find the best reasons why these clients should be accepted, but I am limited by my source material. These people are generally accepted by a few programs, but never reach their dream schools.
Overall, if you reveal your passions in the materials you give to me, genuinely have connected those passions to a general career direction and set of related educational programs, and have done some research into the particular programs you want to apply to, the committee will be able to identify that special ‘spark,’ a unique mixture of reasons whose combination makes you perfect for a program. And my job is to ensure that spark is conveyed to the admissions committee, despite whatever hard-to-understand academic complexity, writing difficulties, and grammar challenges may otherwise block your way. I look forward to trying to share that spark. . .
Sincerely,
-Ryland
