PR and Media Management
From the perspective of what academic disciplines teach associated subjects, these two areas are a combination of business and communications, so there are professionally oriented programs in both topics at both business schools and schools of communication, each with a different style and focus. With this said, the business schools are almost always much more expensive, but will give you access to incredible alumni resources, a degree that gets more respect in the professional world, and, truthfully, a better education in all of the sorts of issues that you will need to confront as a businessman or woman. Business schools also tend to have a greater focus on quantitative skills, which also is part of the reason why they usually lead to better careers. There is a greater focus on team projects, which leads to an interesting process of learning as much from your peers as you do from your teachers. In addition to costing more, it also is usually harder to get into the programs, especially without much experience. People who apply to business schools tend to have at least 2 to 5 years of working experience, and business schools admissions departments consider a person’s prior career experiences as a source of some of that team-based education.

In contrast, PR and media management programs in communication schools tend to be cheaper and often are easier to get into, but do not offer as useful a skill set and do not have the same access to great career services resources and alumni network. Some of the best communication schools for these topics may also have some loose affiliation to business schools, while others focus on teaching useful professional skill sets by allowing students to work on more media or PR projects than business schools would allow their students. If you do not have a lot of experience, and are looking for the media experiences necessary to get into media work generally, it may be easier to go into a communication-based media management program. The MBA programs produce people with a strong competency and business generally with an industry specialization in media or PR topics, while communication schools produce either entry-level media business or PR specialists at the cost of insufficient rights to jump straight to a management level.

With these things said, what you want to do with your degree and career and what you are able to afford, will largely dictate on which direction you should focus your energies. In my opinion, if you’re going to spend two years of your life in graduate school, it should be at least at a pretty solid program, or else you are better off simply gaining another year of work experience in trying for the same caliber of schools again in the future. The American attitude toward graduate education is somewhat different from what I understand to be in China. For example, professional schools often require that individuals have between two and seven years of experience in the work force already, as I was mentioning earlier. Their preference for more experience may require that even if you give it your best shot right now, you may not be of sufficient caliber to get into most of the business schools at this point. Many of my most successful prior clients have had one to three years of somewhat related media experience, but the amazing thing is that almost none of them had experience in exactly what they would want to do after they would finish the degree in the programs I helped them get into. In other words, I believe you have a great chance to get into a few these programs. Even with the slim chance that you do not, a year at an awesome job will put you into a completely different league in terms of your chances at the best schools.

This letter is designed to encourage potential applicants to think about their life and career paths and their connection to the choices of graduate programs. There will be more letters closer to the primary application season where I will discuss:
1. How to research each program,
2. How to think about your CV/resume and sharing your experiences, and
3. How to brainstorm for material to include in your personal statements.]

Anyone who is interested in applying to graduate school in the United States,

My name is Ryland, and I am a US lawyer who is currently obtaining his PhD in media economics and policy. I’ve had a variety of different research, teaching, writing, editing, and other professional experiences, and if you’re curious about them, you are welcome to browse through my LinkedIn profile. Yanyan and I have helped many non-native English speakers with the process of deciding to which graduate schools they should apply and have provided revision suggestions and editing of personal statements, CVs, and resumes. My job and your application’s chances are influenced heavily by three somewhat abstract factors.

First, you must give some idea of what makes you passionate and excited! In the materials personal statements you give, the committee must get a sense of your personality. I have received many personal statements that are too bland and without personality for the admissions committee to create an estimate in their minds about how a particular applicant will fit in with other admitted students, and those are no doubt the hardest for me to improve or fine tune, which in turn leads to lower acceptance rates. I have also read some personal statements that are perhaps too full of personality, but it is much easier to edit down entertaining and quirky things while still letting the best parts of your personality shine through.

Second, and somewhat related to the first, you must have some idea what makes you want to go into graduate school! No matter how passionate or interesting you are, if you do not know why you want a particular career, the admissions committee will sense it and reject your application. My most difficult clients are individuals who really don’t know why they want to go into any particular direction and are simply willing to attend any school or vaguely related specialization. Each department wants to have a sense that you will really use the educational experience they provide to develop your dream career. When you don’t know what you want to do with your life, you haven’t given me that dream story of why you want to spend two years of your life and sometimes $100,000+ on your education, and without it, I have to use weaker, more generic arguments and vague claims that only work sometimes. I have earned admissions for most of these people, but sadly, I worry about whether they have really thought enough about their decisions and whether they will be happy in the long run. Please, for your sake, really reflect upon your own dreams, hopes, and career aspirations before you decide upon which schools you would like to attend. The answers you find within yourself will serve as the backbone to your personal statements.

Third, the more you know about the schools and programs you would like to attend, the better your chances will be in the application. Each graduate program has its own particular strengths, educational philosophy, and desired mix of incoming students, which makes the application process a challenge to everyone involved. That is why you (or we) need to spend a substantial amount of time researching each individual program. This customizing process is often time-consuming, but it is necessary to maximize each application’s chance of success. My hardest clients have not really thought about why they want to apply to each program, have performed little or no research about the programs they are applying to, have perhaps written entirely too short or relatively unrelated personal statements for too many unrelated programs, and have strange requirements and opinions about how personal statements should be written. I spend most of my time on these and try as much as I can to find the best reasons why these clients should be accepted, but I am limited by my source material. These people are generally accepted by a few programs, but never reach their dream schools.

Overall, if you reveal your passions in the materials you give to me, genuinely have connected those passions to a general career direction and set of related educational programs, and have done some research into the particular programs you want to apply to, the committee will be able to identify that special ‘spark,’ a unique mixture of reasons whose combination makes you perfect for a program. And my job is to ensure that spark is conveyed to the admissions committee, despite whatever hard-to-understand academic complexity, writing difficulties, and grammar challenges may otherwise block your way. I look forward to trying to share that spark. . .

Sincerely,

-Ryland
