TOPIC: ARGUMENT110 - The following appeared in a memo from the Principal of Sherwood Junior High School.

"It appears that the lighting in Sherwood High's classrooms, which have large windows but minimal overhead light sources, is impairing student academic performance and teacher morale. Records show that during December and January, the two months with the fewest hours of daylight, attendance rates fall, average daily class participation drops, and grades decline. Teacher resignations are also highest during these months. According to a study of Tundra Vocational School, which experiences entire seasons with little daylight, students' grade point averages increased when Day Glow light bulbs, which mimic sunlight, were installed in classrooms. This study suggests that Sherwood can improve students' academic performance and teachers' morale by using Day Glow light bulbs in winter."

The author proposes a suggestion to Sherwood Junior High School (HJHS) to purchase Day Glow (DG) light bulbs in winter. His/her reasoning mainly ralies on the bad performance both of students and teachers in HJHS during December and January, and a study of Tundra Vocational School (TVS), in which students' grades increased after using DG light bulbs. However, the author's suggestion suffers from infirm assumptions and lack of further information.

Based on the coincidence that the time when students' attendance rates fell, average daily class participation dropped, and grades declineed as well as teacher's resignations were highest was just in December and January, which are known for shortes daylight hours, the author consider the reason for students and teachers' disappointing performance to be the lack of daylight. Actually, he/she totally ignores other features during the two months which may equally invite obstacles in school's education. The two months are also known as almost the coldest time in a year, which may make students feel too cold to be industrious in classes. This may cause some teachers' dissatisfaction of the bad temperature of the city as well, and thus they decided to leave this place for a warmer environment. Also, maybe there was often heavy precipitation of snow, thus the traffic was pretty inferior, causing many students' absenteeism, and they could not follow their courses. Moreover, their teachers had to leave the school for decline in students' grades.

A similar flaw exists in the author's reference of TVS's case. The author presumptuously imposes a relation between increased daylight by DG light bulbs and students' higher grades. Since he/she doesn't provide any further information in TVS, we have justification to suppose that other factors' promoted students' study there. Maybe just at the same time when TVS introduced DG light bulbs into their classrooms, the school was conducting several new effective educational strategies, or invited several new teachers who are pretty skillful, or the school simply adjusted their tests to be easier. If any of these possibility was true, author's intention to cite this case to justify light bulbs' help to students’performance would be retarded.

Even if it is the case that more daylight due to DG light bulbs is the reason for students increasing academic performance in TVS, author’s implicit assumption that same amelioration would happen in HJHS as long as they use the same bulbs is controversial. Supposing deficiency of light is the very culprit in HJHS, regardless for other possible reasons causing students and teachers’ recession as proposed before, introduction of bulbs doesn’t necessarily lead to an improvement. If the number of bulbs is insufficient, their effect would certainly compromise. If local distribution of bulbs is not well arranged, and places really requiring light are not covered, students in those locations would still have problems in study.

To sum up, the author fails to notice other probable reasons for students’ bad scores and teachers’ resignations in HJHS, as well as in the case of TVS. He/she also discards comprehensive speculation on possible ticklers when HJHS use DG light bulbs. If the author could provide more information to rule out other potentially influential factors and make the future after appliance of DG light bulbs more promising, his/her suggestion would definitely be more persuasive.
