Rather than help their children do school work, parents should encourage their children do work independently. Do you agree or disagree
Since children's education is always put in the first place to every parent’s concerns, parents are willing to provide assistance to their children in order to improve their academic performances. However, some people concerns about that this kind of help may result in a lack of independent thinking ability of children. As far as I am concerned, it is definitely wise to encourage children to do school work independently instead of helping them to finish it.
To begin with, doing working independently enable students to consolidate their knowledge obtained from classes, strengthen memory and develop self learning capacities. In other words, only when an individual think roundly and deeply can he is able to be impressed by a concept or a method. Psychologists have told us that individuals can remember something for a long time if he has ever thought about it in-depth. More specifically, take my experience for example; I worked out a sophisticated math problem three weeks ago, but the formulas and the train of thought still refresh in my mind until now. Therefore, instead of helping children solve temporary problems, parents shall inspire them to develop long-term abilities, which is conducive to their future problem-solving process.
In addition, learning from mistakes is a valuable approach to progress. If a student writes a false answer to the math question, next time he is able to make adjustments towards the right direction. While if his parents give him a correct answer straightforward, he is prone to make mistakes again as he did not experience a process of thought.
Consequently, allowing students to learn from missteps is more efficient way to improve their academic performance, since they gradually learn how to avoid them.
However, it doesn’t follow that parents should never give their children specific guidance. It is no deniable that staying up late to finish homework does harm to children as well. Therefore, parents are responsible to offer appropriate approach of learning instead of giving a solution directly.
In a nutshell, thinking independently enables students to develop their self-learning skills as well as learning from mistakes.
