Position Description A PhD graduate research assistantship is available at the School of Civil, Environmental and Infrastructure Engineering, Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The assistantship will cover stipend and tuition waiver for the first two years. The student can apply for other assistantships (e.g., the university’s dissertation research assistantship) and may be given other assistantships (depending on funding availability) afterwards. This position will be supported by a project from US DOI – OSMRE.
Candidate Qualification The candidate is expected to be self-motivated, organized, having good communication and problem-solving skills. The candidate is also expected to publish research discoveries in high-quality peer-reviewed journals and give presentations at regional and national professional conferences. Specifically, the successful candidate should have: · A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree by the date of hire, in environmental engineering, environmental science, civil engineering, chemical and biological engineering, or a closely related field. · Demonstrated excellent scientific writing (e.g., peer-reviewed publication, or student competition) and communication skills. · Experience and/or coursework related to bioelectrochemistry, biotechnology, and/or extraction/separation of rare earth elements · Ability to work independently and in an outdoor environment, a U.S. driving license is preferred but not required.
