16. "Although many people think that the luxuries and conveniences of contemporary life are entirely harmless, in fact, they actually prevent people from developing into truly strong and independent individuals."

I fundamentally disagree with this statement as it considers that the luxuries and conveniences of contemporary life is preventing people from developing into truly strong and independent individuals. In fact, the forming of individuals personality have little to do with the concomitant brought by his age, what really important is how he deal with these things, and more times than never, the many inventories in our contemporary life is tending to foster a strong and independent personality rather than prevent it.

First of all, let us have a closer look at these contemporary luxuries and conveniences, we'll find that they mean faster transportation, easier communication, more comfortable working condition, more kinds of recreation and so forth. They are indeed bringing us more working efficiency and a wider scope of the world, and at the same time, more and better quality of relaxation. However, there are those who state that this kind of conveniences and luxuries make us become more lazy, lack of incentives and highly depended on the modern equipment rather than themselves to handle problems, it is these trends that prevent us from forming a strong and independent personality. But in my opinion, these pessimists have overemphasized the influence of outer environment that imposed on us while overlook the inner incentives which is essential in during the process of forming personality. If a person is diligent, he won't stop working on just because he has finished the work in advance with the conveniences of modern machines, he might pick up some extra work to do to make a better result. while the lazy one will fail to complete his work even with the best aid of equipment if he do not learn how to use it. And the similar result lies in the situation when a person want to foster a strong body with the help of modern equipment.

Moreover, with equipped with the many conveniences and luxuries the contemporary society brings us, I'll say: the individuals is more likely to form a more independent peronality than in any other periods of time in history. Let make it clear as below: the introduction of cars into families enable us to travel more freely without the restriction of buses; the modern office equipement help us to deal with works which could only be done by a group of teams; the widespread use of personal computer and the access to internet is helping us to pass more times alone and finished many great works individually. all of these have contribute to a environment where we are more likely to develop an independent personality. And this might be the reason why in most of the western countries, the individualism is advocated to such an extent. And with the improved equipment in various field in our current China, we have detected a similar trend of individualism.

In conclusion, I do not agree that the luxuries and conveniences will prevent us from forming strong and independent  personality as the outer environment is not the most important factors in forming personality. moreover, if the influence does exists, it is more likely to help rather than prevent such a personality.
