题目:
4The following appeared in a letter from ahomeowner to a friend.

"Of the two leading real estate firmsin our town—Adams Realty and Fitch Realty—AdamsRealty is clearly superior. Adams has 40 realestate agents; in contrast, Fitch has 25, many of whom work only part-time.Moreover, Adams' revenue last year was twiceas high as that of Fitch and included home sales that averaged $168,000,compared to Fitch's $144,000. Homes listed with Adams sell faster as well: tenyears ago I listed my home with Fitch, and it took more than four months tosell; last year, when I sold another home, I listed it with Adams, and it took only one month. Thus, if you want to sell your home quickly and ata good price, you should use Adams Realty."

Write a response in which you examine thestated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how theargument depends on these assumptions and what the implications are for theargument if the assumptions prove unwarranted.

作文:
After reading the letter carefully, I findthat the author was trying his best to justify that Adams Reality is superior toFitch which is also doing well on business with a lot of data and even oneexample of him. It really seems reasonable that we can conclude that in theauthor’s town if we want to sell our houses, the first should be Adams ratherthan Fitch. But I still find some problems within it that make us think twicebefore we get the conclusion.
More agents don't mean much in thecomparison. We can’t get more information from the passage that what they arelike. There is one possibility that 40 agents of Adams are just some small oneswith only one or two persons each inside. Although the workers work full time, during the working time, they may waste their time reading newspapers, drinkingcups of tea or coffee, even they will go out for something else without takinga day off. Sales and profits don’t depend much on the number of the agents, butthe attitude of the workers, the sales ability of the sales person, the passionof the employees and some other factors like the culture of the companies.
Admittedly, sales data is very pervasivejustifying that Adams doing much better. Numbers always convince me in thepast, but later I know that, it sometimes lies. Something more important isjust behind the numbers and we just realize the superficial one. Exaggeratingone aspect may conceal something more important. In this case, we don’t knowthe components of the sales data. Accidents may occur that the Adams make a lotof money just from few consumers. Then, in fact, fewer people go to Adams whenthey need the service than that of Fitch. I just list one aspect.
And the last one, just like we can'tconclude that all the apples on the tree are bad when we get a bad one, theauthor’s example can’t saying much. I even have right to think that it is hisluck rather than anything else that make us Adams sold his house more quickly.
So, after scanning the letter again and again,we can't get the conclusion without some further information. We still have alot of things to suspect.
