Rochester, Stipend $22,000
- Pros: Good in Macro/Finance, Good in Applied Theory, Solid training, Good placement history
- Cons: Few professors in Applied Micro, Location
UNC Chapel Hill, Stipend $15,700+$8,000 (years 1-2)/$4,000 (years 3-5)
- Pros: Good in Econometrics/Financial Econometrics/Finance, Strong connection to Duke (taking courses, inviting professors to be committee members)
- Cons: Not so good in Applied Micro, Placement seems not satisfactory
Rice, Stipend $27,000
- Pros: Good in (structural) Applied Micro, Rising reputation (Rice has changed a lot in the past 5 years, and it is trying to develop a reputation, quoted from one of my recommenders), Small cohort, Location (btw I am a Houston Rockets fan)
- Cons: Uncertain placement, Small econ department and relatively narrow research fields
ASU, Stipend $23,000+$1,500 (year 1)
- Pros: Good in Applied Micro, Traditionally good in Macro, Small cohort, Relatively strong connection to Duke (several Duke PhD alums are at ASU), Good placement (Penn, Indiana, Notre Dame, Fudan, Xiamen)
- Cons: Weak in IO
My current research interests are in Labor/Education/Mechanism Design, or more generally, (structrual) Applied Micro. Rice is very enthusiastic (I have received emails from two professors other than DGS). But you know, it is always possible that one's research interests change in the future...
Many thanks for all the suggestions in advance. |
