Topic
"Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a
contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests,
however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."
正文:
Should scholars and researchers pursue their individual interests even though they are unusual or idiosyncratic? The complex nature of the above issue requires us to consider it on a case-by-case basis. In my point of view, I agree with the speaker. My view can be greatly substantiated by the following discussions.
In the first place, the important reason in support of my view is that many research may seem to have nothing to do with the society's advancement, however, nobody can make sure that it will not have a tremendous effect to the society in the future. For instance, when Albert Einstein was young, he always would like to think about the relation between time and space, which other people at that time may feel quite curious. However, during the Second World War, the A-bomb, which destroyed a whole city easily, is just based on the theory of relativity. Under this circumstance, it is obvious that some research which seems to be useless to the society at present may contribute a lot to the society in the future.
Another important consideration is that when scholars and researchers do what they feel interested, they are able to do a better job. Nobody wants to do what others compel them to do. When people do what they like, they may devote all themselves to the work and their gift could be used best. For example, the famous Polish astronomer Copernicus who advanced the theory that the earth and other planets revolve around the sun studied medicine when he entered the university, but he does not feel interested in it in fact and did not do a good job. Later when he turned to astronomy subject, he found it is really interesting, and contributed all himself to the research, at last he discovered the theory that change the whole world's wrong notion.
Admittedly, there is no denying that in some conditions research has to be limited by the society or government to make sure that the research does not go beyond the moral standard even though some scientists may feel interested in the results. As we know, some of the scientists tried to clone human beings which is forbidden by the government. However, this alone does not constitute a sufficient support to the claim that scholars and researchers should always be concerned if their work has contribution to the society. When the advantage and disadvantage of working with interests and working with thought of contributions to the society are carefully compared, the most striking conclusion is obvious.
Therefore, in conclusion, due to the above-mentioned reasons, I believe that scholars and researchers should not worry much about whether their work has a great contribution to the society, they should mainly work with their interests.
