Hi:
I would like to invite CS graduate students to consider Ph.D.
studies in networking in my group. The following are some essential
requirements for your considerations before you send in your resume.
- M.S degree in CS, with strong theory/algorithm background
- Experience in research, evidenced in publication (attached it in .pdf file
with your resume)
- Interest in networking research (our focus is wireless networking, but
you do not need to be a wireless expert now. We need theory/algorithm
people)
- Strong motivation for research excellence and future career in academia
- Depending on admission process, you may join either in Fall 2005 or
Spring 2006.
Only qualified candidates are encouraged to apply. Please send you resume and
sample publication to my assistant Yi Shi (yshi@vt.edu).
Some background on our current research activities can be found at my homepage.

Congratulations! I am delighted to inform you of your acceptance to
the Computer Science PhD program at Carnegie Mellon University with
full financial support. You should receive your official acceptance letter
and information packet by FedEx within a few days. A faculty member
and a graduate student will contact you to personally welcome you to
the
department and to answer any questions.
The CSD Open House is the weekend of March 18-19. Details
and a folder of travel and hotel information are included in your packet.
A tentative schedule can be found at www.cs.cmu.edu/~openhouse.
Please contact me for any assistance with your travel plans.
Your airline ticket must be issued no later than Thursday, February 24.
In addition, I will also arrange individual appointments with faculty and
grad students. Please provide me with a list, in order of preference,
of at least 5-6 faculty members that you would like to meet with
while here.
If you have any questions, I will be happy to help. I look forward to
seeing you in Pittsburgh.

What is the amount of the scholarship and how is it paid to students and
scholars?
Scholarships for incoming mobility (third-country students and scholars coming
to Europe, Action 2): For each student the scholarship amounts to 21,000 Euro
per academic year. This includes 10 monthly grants of 1,600 Euro and a fixed
amount of 5,000 Euro for fees, travel expenses, relocation costs, etc. For
Courses lasting two years, the student receives double this amount, i.e. 42,000
Euro. The amount of an average scholarship for scholars is 13,000 Euro. This
includes three monthly grants of 4,000 Euro and a fixed amount of 1,000 Euro
for travel expenses. The Erasmus Mundus Masters consortium pays the grants to
students and scholars according to their own payment arrangements which are
communicated to the grantees in advance.

This is still unoficial, and not certain yet, but it seems highly probable
that we will be able to offer you a combination of Fellowship and
Teaching Assistanship (TAship) that will cover your educational expenses
and provide you with a monthly stipend.
For the TAship, the Department will need to assess your ability to speak
english and either someone will call you to converse over the phone or you
will be asked to take a "speak" test (I am not sure if this has to be done
while you are there or once you come here - the director of the admissions
committee will notify you about this).
The main thing that I need from you at this point is whether you are
willing to accept this offer as soon as this arrives, or you need time
before deciding.
i also got rejected from UW yesterday by e-mail. they said only 80 of 1000 people got in, so they're almost as selective as MIT (175 of 2500--i just called them, only to find out I got rejected by them, too).
i applied from a CS perspective, expressing an interest in Web-related AI.
here's a quick profile:
undergrad CS degree from Amherst College in 2003 (是一个比harvard的本科更强的liberal arts 学校)
gpa: 4.0 in CS, 3.93 overall
gre: 790 Q, 640 V, 6.0 AW (简直不是美国学生考的分数)
(did not take the agre, so perhaps that's a big weakness)
research experience: undergrad thesis on genetic algorithms, 2 other projects--one on expert systems, one on genetic algorithms with a simulated robot controller
SOP: i thought was pretty good--talked about research experience, my current job, career goals (to teach)
Reccs: 1 amazing rec from my current boss (Harvey Deitel, author of Java How to Program, C++ How to Program, etc), 2 reccs from Amherst profs I studied and researched with
post college experience: working as CS textbook author/editor/programmer. got co-authorship credit for one book "internet & WWW how to program"

If you have not already heard from them, you will shortly be getting a
notice from the EECS department at MIT, informing you that you have
been admitted to the graduate program in Computer Science at MIT next
fall. Congratulations!!
Over the next several weeks you will be making a difficult and
important decision: Which graduate school to attend? To help you make
an informed decision, we would like to invite you to attend our annual
Graduate Admissions Visit Weekend. Each year, we invite all of the
newly admitted Computer Science graduate students to visit MIT. We
organize a series of events, including an introduction to MIT and the
graduate program, an overview of research in the Computer Science
and the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, and individual interviews
with faculty members that have overlapping research interests. We
also arrange for you to spend time with our current graduate students,
who can give you a detailed sense of what graduate student life is
like at MIT.
This year, the visit weekend is scheduled for Saturday March 5 and
Sunday March 6. The primary activities will take place on Sunday.
Saturday afternoon our students hold informal get-togethers for those
of you who are here before the pizza dinner. Both Saturday and Sunday
are low-key events organized for you to get familiar with us.
We will arrange lodging for you, typically with a current graduate
student. (If you prefer, we will place you in a local hotel, but
staying with students is more informative.) We will cover all
reasonable travel expenses up to a maximum of $500, independent of
whether you are traveling from within the US or from abroad. Please,
make travel arrangements soon in order to get lower fares, and we ask
that you plan to stay over on the 6th, as a Saturday layover usually
reduces fares.

in my opinion, GIT CS is not that outstanding
it's a very big department, so the overall performance is good
but the individual faculties are not as niu as umich (although
umich also has a big department)
just like CMU, it ranks No.1 but apparently its faculty is not
as niu as stanford and berkeley
of course you need to consider your research interest as well
