In order for any work of art—whether film, literature, sculpture, or a song—to have merit, it must be understandable to most people.
The value of any work of art is a complex definition throughout all the ages. For most people, to understand a real value of a piece of artwork is hard to reach; and even though the value is accepted by the majority, it might be valueless.
The first thing to note is that the value of a piece of artwork usually does not depend on the majority. Sometimes, it is the art critics to define the merits. When the unprecedented development of technology leads to the specialization in almost every aspect of our lives, the art is unable to avoid this trend. In this case, a piece of art work usually contains a lot of professional knowledge and skills which hamper the majority to understand. For example, the works of Franz Kafka receive much attention from the public after him when the critics in literature claim that these works represent the Expressionism in Europe while to the average people, it is difficult to state accurately what the Expressionism is. Sometimes it is the businessmen to raise the value of artworks, because the pursuit for the art, on the one hand, beautifies the company's image in the public; on the other hand, might contribute to augment of the attention and profits from the customers. We can look no further than at the shocking news that one piece of Van Gogh's work is purchased by a Japanese corporation at millions of dollars.
Second, when most people can understand a piece of work, it does not guarantee the value. In other words, this kind of art might hold the merit of practicality and popularity. For example, the dominator of today's most movie and music products is the interests and tastes of young people, who play an important role in this market for they are the main force among the consumers. One can look at the top ten movies weekly and will notice that most are commercial films rather than artistic ones. In literature, what a publisher considers most is whether a book would be a best-seller. And the most popular and easiest understandable literatures on the shelves are those to teach people how to assemble a computer or how to manage a team or how to intercommunicate with each other. In this case, the artworks merited in the entertainment value and the commercial value, far away the original one.
Finally, sometimes, even though the majority cannot capture the understanding of artwork, it does not reject the merits. Our cities abound a great deal of sculptures, seldom would tell out what signification is in those shapes of grotesque, but most would concede that they beautify our surroundings. And there surely exist some great artists who produce the artworks of great value as well as independent musicians and film makers, which are also welcome by the public as well as the Hollywood commercial films.
In short, the value of artwork is difficult to define. After all, a piece of truly great artwork is usually considered to be from outer space, or another realm beyond us. Then human languages or thinking is useless in front of the artworks.
