------题目------
The primary goal of technological advancement should be to increase people's efficiency so that everyone has more leisure time.
------正文------
The speaker claims that technological advancement should aim at increasing people's efficiency thus letting people have more leisure time. I concede that technological advancement has increased people's efficiency greatly, however, it never let people have more leisure time. Actually, people are working more time than before. And technological advancement's primary goal should not be more leisure time for people.
Admittedly, technological advancement has sharply increased people's efficiency of work. With the introducing of high-tech instruments in manufacturing and computer to aid management, productivity has largely improved. However, it seems that more leisure time is not a necessary consequence along with the increase of efficiency. On the contrary, to satisfy the higher expectation of the customers and the larger demand, people have to work more time thus sacrificing more of their leisure time. A recent survey indicates that since the early 1980s the American’s average hours at work has increased by 20 percent while the amount of leisure time available to the average person has dropped by 32 percent. And according to the survey, this trend toward less leisure time is unwavering. In addition, the more and more complex technology and increasingly rapid development require people to keep updated, thus devoting more time in learning.
I can’t agree with the speaker for another reason that more leisure time should not be the primary goal of technological advancement. Technological advancement may increase the quality of the leisure time in providing people more choices of entertainment and more convenience in everyday life, but more leisure time is never the primary goal of technological advancement. In ancient times, people devise instruments mainly for the goal of survive. Instruments for cultivating, for hunting, for protecting the families, have contributed greatly in human’s early development. In modern times, technological advancement is playing a more important role. Advances in anthropology and archeology enable people to know more about their history and generating; advances in some practical fields, such as computer, information, engineering, etc., enable people more effective in managing, more fluent in communication and information transfers, more efficient in producing; advances in spaceflight enable people to explore the universe and exploit the unknown resource. In one word, people develop technology to know about their past, to better present life, and to search for persistent survival and continuable development of human.
In conclusion, technological advancement has greatly improved people’s efficiency. But the increasingly rapid development requires people to devote more and more time to work and to learn thus decreasing their leisure time. People develop technology for better future and for continuable development. More leisure time is never the primary goal for technological advancement. |
