------正文------
I totally agree with the speaker that the study of an academic discipline is so important that it could alter the way we perceive the world. Although the world remains the same as before, after studying the discipline, we see it with different eyes.
The study of an academic discipline could help us to discover the essence of the phenomena and sweep away our doubt or fear of the unknown world. For example, when I was young, I have no idea about the eclipse. A legend handed down from the ancestors says that the reason why the moon becomes smaller and smaller is that a dog is nibbling it. I was afraid of that because I thought the dog was so strong that it could even eat up the moon in sky. However, when I studied the astronomic discipline in the high school, I came to know that a lunar eclipse occurs when the earth runs between the moon and the sun and its shadow blocks the light reflected from the sun, so we could not see the whole moon. After that, I would not fear any more when eclipse happens again. When we master an academic discipline, we would know the nature of the world as well as the rules behind the phenomena. We would not think them as intricate and unexplained. Furthermore, we could use the rules to serve us and improve our living. More and more technologies and tools are developed to apply those natural rules into our daily lives. Everything in the world may be still the same as before, but we have ability to make use of it.
Another argument I am in favor of the claim is that due to the study of an academic discipline, we would understand the connections between different objects and see the world around us as a whole on a higher level. Before we learn about the biological knowledge, we may think that human beings are the king of the nature. We have the power to control other creatures in the world. But the biological theory would tell us that human is only a node of the food chain. Green plants absorb the energy from the sun and convert it to the food in a process known as photosynthesis. Then, herbivores such as animals and insects obtain their energy by eating green plants. Flesh-eating and carnivorous animals feed on the herbivores or other carnivores. Finally, the decomposers, organisms such as fungi and bacteria, break down the dead or dying matter into nutrients which could be used again. Human beings, considered as omnivorous animals, are only a small part in this cycle. It is clearly that if we destroy other nodes in the food chain without restraint, we would lose the food and resource for survival. So, after the study, we may pay attention to the environment around us, reduce the pollution and try our best to keep the biosphere healthy. We would acknowledge that living things in the world have equal right to survive on earth as we human beings. In this sense, the study could help us to know about the world as well as ourselves in an entire point of view.
All in all, in the process of human civilization, to some extent, our cognition of the world is just like a long-period transition from simple and naive towards precise and comprehensive by studying disciplines. The world around us may stay the same as before, but we have new perception of it. |
