In this memo, the president of Viva-tech upholds that a large central plant should be set up in Grandview instead of our existing small assembly ones. To make us recognize this trend of improvement, the president lists three arguments, such as low costs, more adult labors and the like. From my point of view, this argument contains several logical flaws, which render it unconvincing.
At first, the president fails to offer any evidences to substantiate the positive revelation between the size of plants and producing costs. Perhaps the cost of sum of all small plants is equal to, if not less than that of a large central one, for maybe small factories don’t need too many high-tech medical equipments, or workers in small plants are paid less than in a large one. So, without exact data, the president cannot point out the suggestion about building a large central plant other than small assembly ones, let alone choosing places which fit for building as following.
Secondly, even if the assumption that a large factory costs less is true, Grandview is not definitely the perfect location to set up a central plant. The largest adult population in Grandview doesn’t entirely enter the factory. Perhaps most of them work in the farm or have jobs in other fields other than in the plant. Hence, the large of adult population doesn’t necessarily lead to staffing the plant quickly and easily directly. On the other hand, the president points the average wage eared by workers in Grandview is less than that in other location so that they could save costs while building the plant in Grandview. Common sense indicates that the average data cannot represent each individual. Maybe other vacations such like teacher, doctor, are offering little salary and in contrast the workers in Grandview are paid much more wage than in other locations. Therefore, if the president cannot get conclusion that Grandview would be an ideal location without ruling out two possibilities above.
Finally, costs and labor resource are part of factors which are needed to consider in selecting location of plants. At the same time, there are several aspects influencing the profit of the factory deeply. For instance, materials resource and experts in the process of choosing location of the factory are two most important factors. We could image, without materials needed by producing and experts who lead manufacturing, low costs and cheap labor has no meaning.
In sum, the manager’ argument is unpersuasive as it stands. To strengthen it the president better evidence these three points above. 1) at present or in future, a large plant does reduce more costs than do the existing small assembly plants. 2) most adults people in Grandview would go to new plant. 3) after comparing other factors in choosing location, he could get the perfect choice. |
