TOPIC: ISSUE153 - "Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."
WORDS: 502          TIME: 0:55:00          DATE: 2006-8-30

In this age of new knowledge and technology emerging fast, information people could get is increasing exponentially. To examine the authenticity of these new informations, studying with certain skepticism is necessary. The speaker asserts students should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively. However, in my view, it is unreasonable to encourage every student to doubt whatever they study.

Skepticism makes great progress. In the academic field, scientists with skepticism always discover significant laws and inventions, because they dare to doubt the knowledge they learn. For example, Copernicus, the famous scientist in Renaissance, discovered the truth that the earth is rotated around the sun, and creates the new concept heliocentricism. His momentous achievement attributes to his courage of doubting what the authority taught. In the political field, skepticism is also important to prompt the society progress.  When people understand the purpose of a policy, some of them would suspect the negative effects which it could bring. After gathering information and searching solutions, the new policy would be better to citizens. Hence, if people consider a new policy with a certain skeptical attitude, the new policy would be amended much better than the original policy.

Doubting what they learn is an important ability to students, accepting knowledge passively is not a good choice. What students learn in the schools is not absolutely correct. The new knowledge and concepts are invented every year. What is correct today may be wrong tomorrow. There is a very typical example in astronomy field. From last century, people all accepted that there are nine planets in the solar system, but today after astronomer carefully researched and discussed, Pluto was degraded to a dwarfplanet. Hence, there are only eight planet in the solar system, and what people learned before is wrong. Moreover, the ability of doubting is an important way to study new knowledge and get more experience. Students do not stay in schools forever. When they get into the society, they would face various information and knowledge. Indeed, there are many fake information in them, therefore with a skeptical attitude can help students get real and useful information in the society.

Nevertheless, people should not ask children to bring certain skepticism to whatever they study. Children lack the ability of distinguishing right and wrong, and they can not analyze issues in different aspects roundly. If children see some negative samples on TV, they would doubt what teachers and parents tell them. This suspicion is improper. And what children learn in schools is fundamental knowledge, which is absolutely correct. It is unnecessary to doubt the credibility of one and one is two. Furthermore, many truths are eternal. For instance, no matter when, the virtues such as braveness, honest, hardworking should not be doubted. Therefore, people should doubt what they are taught selectively.

In conclusion, skepticism plays an essential role in the progress of human civilization. Learning knowledge selectively is better than accepting all passively. And when people doubt some theories, they should be objective and rational.

Skepticism makes great progress. In the academic field, scientists with skepticism always discover significant laws and inventions, because they dare to doubt the knowledge they learn. For example, Copernicus又是他!刚看了cc的就是他,我看的都快疯了,考官估计也受不来所有人都举他了吧?, the famous scientist in Renaissance, discovered the truth that the earth is rotated around the sun, and creates the new concept heliocentricism. Doubting不如Keeping skeptic好 what they learn is an important ability to students, accepting knowledge passively is not a good choice. What students learn in the schools is not absolutely correct. The new knowledge and concepts are invented every year. What is correct today may be wrong tomorrow好. There is a very typical example in astronomy field. From last century, people all accepted that there are nine planets in the solar system, but today after astronomer carefully researched and discussed, Pluto was degraded to a dwarfplanet. Hence, there are only eight planet in the solar system, and what people learned before is wrong你可以说得细一点,例如占星术,希腊神话等等.

If children see some negative samples on TV, 这个和skeptic有点远了吧??they would doubt what teachers and parents tell them. This suspicion is improper. And what children learn in schools is fundamental knowledge, which is absolutely correct. It is unnecessary to doubt the credibility of one and ---> add one is two.

It is unnecessary to doubt the credibility of one and one is two 太强了~~.
