ISSUE36 - "The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."
The speaker asserts that the greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them,not by their contemporaries.However,I don't agree with this opinion on the ground that there are respective situations in various cases,such as in the art ,in the science ,in the business,and so on.
   When it comes to the art,greatness must be tested over time.It is the real thing examined for long periods that has the qualification to be called as art.Artist,or anyone who learns about the art would agree that art is the product of a person's authetic emotion,a manifestation of a person's unique creative impulse and a creation of the artist's spirit.There is no denying the fact that the public usually doesn't have a favorable attitude toward a surprising work.As time goes ,the masterpiece and the ideas of the artist who created the masterpiece will be accepted,or even adored by the mass.Here are two examples involving picasoo and van gogh.During their lifetimes,they are all not appreaciated by the mass.What is worse for van gogh,more often than not,he had to face the danger of stravation and exposure.However,they are becoming the idols of the painters of morden society,and the paintings under their names are always paid a heavy price for.
   By contrast,in science it is the usual thing that greatness is confirmed at the moment that a science theory is brought forward.In the field of science,a theory that can be used to explain the current questions reasonably and is always considered as great breakthrough.of course,this theory will be later improved ,refined and discredited with the development of the science, even a new theory will be mentioned to be the substitute of the old ones.To illustrate this point clearly,here is an example that is very persuasive:Newton formulated the three fundamental laws of mechanics which guides the development of the science of the west for centuries.  He is honored the name of the father of morden science because of his seminal work. In 20th century,as a development of fundamental laws of mechanics,Einstein found special and general theories of relativity revolutionized morden thought on the nature of space and time and formed a theoretical base for the exploration of atomic energy.He won a 1921nobel prize for his great contribution to science.In short,the significance of contribution made by scientists can be judged by their contemporaries.
  In the realm of business,in some cases great achievement is recognizable immediately,while in other cases it is not.Take Microsoft's Bill Gates for example.not mentioning the night of sudden wealth,Gates is responsible for lifting american technology out of the doldrums during 1970s to  restore america to the status of economy powerhouse and the technological leader of the world.And his contribution is recognizable now-as it is happening. Of course,the Dos and Windows operation system,might eventually become the historical relics.Yet his greatness is already secured.
  From what has been discussed aboved,we may finally draw the conclusion that many great individuals, particularly in science and business, have won their reputation during their own time and other great achievements,especially art ones ,can not be confirmed as such without the benifit of historical perspective.
