The author asserts that our society should not make extraordinary efforts in the cost of massive money and jobs to save species in danger, because in past years many species extinct due to natural processes instead of human behaviors, which I can hardly fully agree. On balance, however, we have to do something to protect endangered animals.

First, the fact mentioned by the author that in the past human behaviors have nothing to do with the extinction of many species does not necessarily mean they have not affected the survival of animals nowadays. As we well know, following the development of industrial revolution, much more machines have been invented, much more technological improvement have taken place, thus unbelievably more serious pollutions to the environment. Various natural resources, such as water, trees and so forth, have been polluted, which directly threaten the survival of endangered animals. It is reported that the number of extinct species every year in the latest hundreds of years is times more than that in the past. If so, it is our human beings' responsibility to take effective measures to protect endangered species.

Further, even put side the responsibility thing, saving species is the very way to finally protect ourselves. According to the ''food chain" theory, survival of species, including our human, depends on the existence of the former species as food. Therefore, once one or more species become extinct, much more species that eat them as food will suffer from insufficient of food and energy, and unavoidably become extinct finally. Of course, our human beings cannot escape from such destiny sooner or later. Aware the significance of protecting endangered species to our own benefits, of course we should make certain efforts to do this thing.

However, the author's argument is not completely unreasonable mainly on two aspects. For one thing, Darwin's famous theory "natural selection" can never be neglected, which indicates that natural powers cause extinctions of certain species is just a unique way of nature to guarantee better living conditions of stronger species in form of disappearance of weaker ones. Hence, extinctions of some species can improve other species' survival. However, if our human try our best to prevent those weak ones becoming extinct, we are actually threaten the stronger ones' survival, and it is seemingly totally unfair.

For another thing, many problems of our society have not been effectively solved, for example, starvation and AIDS, if we put limited resources such as money and energy to protect the survival of endangered species, our own survival and development may be lowered or even threatened due to lack of enough material supply. Anyway, treating serious social problems sometimes seems more significant and emergent than protecting some endangered species.

In sum, since we cannot assure whether nowadays people's behaviors have led to the extinct of some species or least threaten their survival, and also efforts made to save animals are just work done to protect our human beings, we have to do something. However, of course, money and energy spent on such issue have to be appropriately measured to draw a balance between human prosperity and species safety.
