144。it is artist, not the critic, who gives society something of lasting value.

With the development of the whole society, arts are becoming more multifarious, and the understanding of these art productions, most of which is provided by the critic, is also multifarious. There is no doubt that some of the understandings are wrong or even garbon , so some people maintain that the critics do nothing to giving society something of lasting valve. To some extent, this opinion is not wrong, however, in my opinion, this opinion sort of ignore the contribution of critics to the development of arts and artists.

Sometimes critics do harm to the arts and artists. Inappropriate criticism tends to undermine and constrain the artist’s creativity if the artists pay too much attention to what the critics say. First, the critics may not really understand what the artist want to express by their productions. Second, sometimes the artist is so ultramodern that the critics can not follow them. In the case, the comment of critics must be ridiculous and misunderstand the opinion of the art production. There are too many examples in the history. Dream of red chamber, accepted as one of the greatest novel in the history now, was describe as filled with porn and imputation to the feudalism when it first come out. Though the critics sometimes make some inappropriate criticisms to art production, we should simply claim that critics are useless or even harmful to arts and artists.

Though I have set an example of a misunderstanding to a great art production, not every art production is great. Thousand of low-grade production, which have little value, come out everyday. And sometimes ordinary people cannot tell the good from the bad. On this occasion, critics who have professional knowledge and experience can help people to understand the good one and abandon the bad one. To some extent, the process of electing the classical arts is just like this. In this process, critics play an very important rule.

On the other hand, critics are also very important to the artists. Critics are the bridge between critics and ordinary people. When an art production comes out, the author has little chance to know whether the people understand the artwork which carries his or her thoughts of the society. Artists can learn whether artwork is accepted through the criticism. Sometimes the criticism is very representative. Then artists can consider whether the artwork express his or her thought clearly and how to make progress at next time.

To sum up, critics play great part in the development of arts. They help ordinary people tell good productions from bad ones and teach them how to enjoy these artworks, they also help artists communicate with the ordinary people. Foremost, they make all people focus on and enjoy these art production not only the author but also ordinary people
