Issue41—“Such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science.”

As there exist many uncertain, explicable, and irresolvable problems in the world, while the nonmainstream areas of inquiry can satisfy human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science, thereby, play a vital role in society. In my viewpoint, the methods from nonmainstream areas are short-lived, even wrongly resulted. The mainstream science will solve them sooner or late.

Undoubtedly, the mainstream science has developed rapidly, solved plenty of problems like the three technology revolutions significantly changing the world every time. We can do lots of things that human in the past looked forward to achieve but couldn’t. For instance, human were thirsty to fly in the sky but failed for many times, which we can finish easily. Outside of the earth, we can even fly to the moon nowadays that is impossible to image before; Inside of it, we can drug thousands of meters into the earth to get the sample of the mine. Plus, we can clone gene in microcosmic dimension from human to animal since the birth of the clone sheep--Dolly, and also do face-lifting or do transplant operations to a person in macroscopical size, and so on in varied realms. It is the mainstream science that makes our modern society as it is now.

Admittedly, there exist numerous varied problems that the mainstream science can not solve, or even explain, such as the UFO, a strange phenomenon that puzzle scientists all the time. Also in the medicine area, we still face some diseases that can not charm away named as incurable disease, like the AIDS.

Therefore, some people turn to the nonmainstream areas to gain what they need, even some famous scientists in mainstream realm. Newton, a good case in point, is one of the greatest scientists all over the world, whose great contributions to the science are calculus, the law of gravity, and the three great laws on kinetics. However, at his later years, he turned his interests to theology for he encountered questions that he though can not be solved with his theory. Moreover, as we know that the world is full of uncertainty, we can not predict what will happen tomorrow. When we face problems that own several choices, we can not forecast the results of each selection, and then we will use methods like astrology or fortune-telling to decide randomly. But all these are feints that we can not gain anything right as the case of Newton who advance nothing after he became interested in theology.

Nevertheless, we should have confidence that we will find answers of the problems now or later as the development of mainstream science, though we can not solve them now. The case of Newton above is so. Most of the doubts Newton met follow good results after Einstein advances his theory of relativity. Some diseases that were regarded as incurable disease have developed methods to heal such as the white plague, diabetes. So we should believe that we will find the method to heal AIDS one day, so as the others.

In sum, all the things can be solved by the mainstream science, or will be, although we face lots of uncertain and unsolved problem today. The nonmainstream areas can perhaps help you solve problems but in short time and mostly lead wrong results. We should believe the mainstream science.
