Under most circumstances we are open to various choices according to our personal and social experience. It is because we are human beings who are endowed with the right and ability of choosing freely, which is further secured by our democratic beliefs. However, when it come to some incidents over which we humans rarely have control over, we are left with little choice.


Our personal life are full of choices which is due to our free will. We are free to choose the lifestyle we want to lead; we may favor a hectic but exciting pace of life in big cities, or we may prefer the relaxed manner of living in small towns. Also we allow to choose courses that interested us mostly to take in school and devote to the profession that we recognize as the most meaningful. Tough others may see our choices as strange or even ridiculous, yet no one really can and able to change it. And a problem we sometimes face is not we are lack of choice, in the contrary, it being that, just as one of my professors once said: " we live in a world which contains increasing more choices, which sometimes even makes us disorientated." It usually is such a pain experience to choose one product out of tens or even hundreds of brands that sometimes I even want to give up the right of choosing.


Free will is one of the most precious issues at the very heart of a democratic society, and the right of choosing freely is continuingly preserved by our democratic beliefs. A group of individuals and organizations cannot deprive others of their rights of choosing their own lives. We are now become more tolerant and respect of the rights homosexuals have to choose sex partners freely than twenty years ago, for we gradually realized that we, citizens of a democratic society, cannot impinge upon other’s right of choosing things they recognize as right if their choices do not harm other people’s rights. Our society as a whole also become more concerned with protecting the various ideas its citizens possess, and we believe only people are encourage to have their own choice can our society really become a democratic one and can thus to realize the problem it has and then be do what we can to better our society and our democratic system.


However, there are also many circumstances under which we have little choice, which, according to my observation, are mostly the incidents over which we human beings have little control. The most paradigmatic one is the events caused by the natural power. For the tens of thousands of victims of the recent tropical cyclone in Myanmar and of the great quake hitting China, do they have any choice to avoid such catastrophes? Another example is the accidents caused by others, which we do all do right but we have no choice but to face such a accidents. Under certain religious circumstance, people are required and they are voluntary to give up their other choices but choose the one assigned by the beliefs of their religion. However, I must admit all these mentioned circumstances do occupy only very small portion of our life.


In sum, though we are sometimes trapped in circumstances within which there is little space for our freedom of choice, we should concede that most of our time we are enjoying various choices personally and our democratic beliefs guarantee that we can possess these rights. And just like one garden is beautiful for the various flowers it possesses, our society will be flourish for the differing choices it provide.
