Which is the chief benefit from the study of history? The speaker’s argument is that making people realize that in any period of time, people are not essentially different is the main benefit of the study of history. In my point of view, the assertion presented by speaker is limited even fallacious in some cases, because there are so lots of benefits, some of which may be more important than the facet that the speaker asserts, from the study of the history. I tend to make discussion about main merits for the study of history as follows.
First of all, across the span of human endeavor, we, all the long time, make knowledge and explore ourselves. We are extremely interested in our own secrets. Perhaps the research about the nature of humanity serves to make the solution for ruling out our aggression and greed. To help understand ourselves, we not only make analysis about modern people, but also we should make serious research about our history. If there is no comparing the present with preceding people, we could not entirely know about ourselves. If there is no study of the human history, we cannot know ourselves about that why we make progress to existent civilization, and what we will advance into. Consequently, the study for history makes contribution in knowing ourselves.
In the second place, I tend to discuss that the merits of the study of history is helpful to make a guidance for our deeds. We can learn something that guides our practice from successful heroes and great achievements in the past. We not only realize the some similarities, but also know the difference, between the present and preceding time. If we only make sense the similar points, and then entirely imitate and copy the preceding methods, finally we will be failure. Accordingly the study of history about differences from the people who lived at different periods is also of importance. If we do not involve in the study of history, we could make bad mistakes the same with the preceding ones, and have no good guidance for our deeds. So in this way we make great benefit form the study of history.
Last but not least, in terms of human spirit level. The history of the study of history is also beneficial to improve the moral level and inspire us to succeed. For example, we can learn and realize the importance of peace from the cruelty of combats, and improve the realization of protecting our environment from the study of the climate change history. In some cases, when we think about heroes’ great deeds, it provides us inspiration to deal with present things.
In summary, due to above analysis bout the merits of study of history, we can concludes that the chief benefit of the study of history is knowing ourselves, guiding our deeds, and improving human spirit level. All of three facets are extremely significant for humanity. The argument presented by speaker is of limitation, because on the one hand, the consideration about the no huge difference of people in different periods may be contained in the first merits, knowing ourselves. On the other this argument may be entirely fallacious when it comes to different realms. For example at least our present style of life and work evidently differs from the people several hundred years ago.作者: GrossDeutsch 时间: 2009-7-19 20:51:04
