41) The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.
Time: 80 mins
I agree with the part of statement that greatness of individuals can be decided by people live after them. However, if the speaker limits the people just to that kind of group, and omit the effect of contemporaries in evaluating the greatness, it seems like unconvincing.
Before we discuss who have qualification in evaluating a person's greatness, we should clear the idea, which is, what kind of person is a great man? Different industries have different definition. In science and technology, a great man may invent something that brings benefit for the public, and in video, a great man may star lots of movies and shows, and bring his or her audience lots of fun. While in some other areas, like art, a great man maybe a person who express his or her feelings by a creative and unique way, which create a new theme in such area.
So, when we discuss whether descendants or contemporaries have better evaluation on a person's work, we need to look at which industries this person at. For different industries, different definition in the greatness, decide the people who have more fair evaluation on a person's greatness.
Let us begin talk about the art area first. In this area, some great artists we have already known, such as Van Gogh, a post-Impressionist painter who expresses his true feelings in bold color. However, his work cannot be accepted by the contemporaries. His express way in painting is too advanced in his time, and people who live with Van Gogh at same age do not know the beauty of his art. Since Van Gogh's work has outstripping nature, so does many other artists' work, they can be fairly evaluated by the people live after them, rather than the contemporaries.
While, in other areas, greatness just need to be decided by contemporaries. Since such great work benefits the contemporary public. We cannot say Thomas Edison is a great man if he invent electric light bulb which cannot use for lighting, even after his death, it is still a toy bulb, which cannot bring more benefits for the descendants than for the contemporaries. And Charlie Chaplin also cannot become a great comedian if his film figure is not welcome by the contemporary public.
All in all, when we discuss the great man is decided by who, descendants or contemporaries, we need to know what industries this person is at. As we know, in different industries, the evaluation for the influence of a great man in his industry is variable.
