38"In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."
Recently, with the thriving of television and developing technology used in it, there is much debate over whether television can take place the functions of books, akin to television’s partially occupation of the position of radios in daily lives. Some people maintain that the latest television does no harm to eyes, so they will replace books and receive much more support; meanwhile other scholar insist no matter how advance newest TV is, the advantage of reading has been integrated into human nature. As far as I concern, even though TV sets, which is inevitably needed, are so amazing today, books will still take a significant position in education, recreation, etc.
Admittedly, most recreation time is spent on watching films, advertisements and tournaments. To most residents, time before sleeping, minutes after eating, and leisure time without any burden, the only thing that satisfies them a lot is TV programs. People always find it is, also, possible to reach the latest information, some anecdotes, touching stories, introduction of modern technology and news from programs such as news at ten, rostrum of scholars, discovery, and national geography. According to recent survey conduct by sociality department Peking University among tem top universities in China, seventy six point five percent interviewees advocate that it is quite leisurely sitting in front of TV sets with nothing to worry about, the result of the survey also uncovers that eighty point two undergraduates have learned a lot from science documentary. For instance, medical documentary reveals the secret of human body; geography documentary explain the truth of volcano eruption; and the documentary of NESA tells me the configuration of enormous cosmos. Imagine the days without televisions, we may find how the replaceable position of television in our daily life.
However, the important role that television plays in people’s daily does not mean that books are going to be replaced by it. As the head professor of my department said (and I paraphrased) “The education effect conducted by PPT through projecting is far from the effect taught by reading books and writing on blackboard, so he can’t agree the method of ordinary education more by his thirty years’ experience of education.” On one hand the thought of this professor is, definitely, exact, since it is almost impossible to consider quickly and precisely for quite a long period of time, some reading back and pause of mind is inevitable. On the other hand, the method of studying by reading books originates from childhood, which means it has integrated in to our brain. So books will continue to be our main implements for studying.
Last but not least, a habit of reading always leads people become diligent, on the contrary, television always makes them lazy. Reading books is akin to dating with your girl friends, the better relationship you have, the more thought and love you will give her. Hence you will certainly get the best response. However, some television programs are meaningless, but appeals audience deeply. Thus time is wasted on these garbage, and the audience receives nothing, but become lazy. Obviously, the advantage of reading books compares with watching creates a tremendous gap.
In sum, people may never be able to reach the same conclusion on this controversial issue, due to their different experiences and conflicting values. Nevertheless public awareness of various dimensions of the question on whether television can take the place of books discussed above will certainly contribute to the through understanding of my notion that no matter how advance the television is, the importance of books will never be shaken.
