How many methods historians can use to reveal the truth of certain historic events? According a lecture conducted by the president of history department of my collage, (and I paraphrased) he said “Research from documentations and literatures written by reliable persons, and actions of digging into historical remains for useful information have significant meanings for the study of history.” Further more, in the ocean of historic readings, the proportion describing numerous contributions of normal but majority people are far from parallel with that of famous but minority figures. So, in my point of view, historians are forced to study those distinguished figures for the purpose of uncovering the very truth in history which has passed by for quite a long time, but they should also take some literatures concerning the great accomplishment of normal people as reference.

To begin with, one has not to go very far to find that minority famous persons are worthy of the more attention from historians. Taking into the scrolls of history, we may discover the phenomena that distinguished persons receive particular descriptions in all kinds of documentations. Take emperor Qian Long, among the great emperors of Qing Dynasty, as an example, the record of his accomplishment, the stories of his wives, and the anecdotes of his birth are described clearly in the official documentations. Thus, it is inevitable for a scholar, researching the culture of Qing Dynasty, to research Qian Long. By contrast, scarcely, can we believe that normal soldiers are described deliberately and deeply of his bravery in fighting enemies in the documentation of a nation history. Further more, distinguished figures got great attention in both his era and now days for his magnificent contributions, and normal people just receive a little word in the recording literatures of history, for sole accomplishment of these people are not as big as those famous figures’. Then, we have to confess that the study of history places so much emphasis on great individuals is reasonable.

On the other hand, the accomplishments made by famous figures are always the signs of certain period. Wisdom, perseverance, ability, insightfulness are the essential elements which can create a great person. For instance, Chairman Mao’s wisdom and ability leads us to create a new China; Deng Xiao Pin’s wisdom and perseverance let him establish the strategy of peaceful development so that the economy of china begins to rocket. These two distinguished figures are inscribed into the historic scrolls of China, and their accomplishments are, definitely, the ensign of the first step of china’s development. So, if our offspring wants to study the history of new china’s creation, they can not miss Chairman Mao’s contributions, and if they want to look into the deep reason for the fast rising economy in China, Deng Xiao Pin is the most important person who should be researched in the beginning.

Admittedly, although the study of distinguished persons is inevitable, the exact people who commit the meaningful accomplishment are not those famous figures but normal people. Without the help of local people, it is unbelievable for such badly armed solider to undermine Japanese enemy with advanced rifles and tankers in such a short time. The very truth tells us how great contributions made by local people at the particular times. Further more, as a recent survey conducted by sociality department of Peking University among tem top universities in China, ninety five point three percent undergraduates acknowledge the limitation of human beings. And the survey also reveals that eighty two percent graduates realize the importance of team sprit. In conclusion if there is no one to help the figured distinguished person, where is the real great person who is excellent enough to be studied by their offspring as the major reference of studying particular history.

To summarize, it is very likely that people may not reach the same conclusion on this controversial issue, due to their different experiences and conflicting values. Nevertheless, public awareness of the numerous dimensions of the relationships among historians, distinguished figures, and normal people will certainly contribute to thorough understanding of the conclusion that historians should take the study of famous minority individuals drastically and use the documentation of normal majority people as reference. Thus, the fruit of research will be objective and exact.
